Err, haggle with cash first......you're buying a motorcycle, not a can of beans.

If you're doing finance, why not get a personal loan - then you are walking in with cash..

If they're willing to haggle more for finance then it's only going to be up to the commission they get from it, which is obviously less than what the finance costs you or the lender wouldn't make a profit.

You're better off paying cash if you have it.

I'm a bit broke at the moment, but even I didn't consider resorting to 'finance' to purchase my last can of Asda's finest basics.

Anyway; they get paid money for finance, sometimes it can be very good money.
Often they will have a cash handling fee similar to a card fee from their bank. So walking in with cash is mostly good for the psychological value of "I've gone to the effort of getting a big wad of notes and bringing them in here - you don't want me to walk out with them again."

You can haggle on finance but you have to be a hard-faced bastard to do it - you don't have the psychological effect of "I have cold, hard cash here, if you want it, you better meet my demands".

That being said, my fiancee's parents have just taken delivery of a 2011 Kia Soul(less). 7k miles, all the mod cons, was supposed to be £170 a month + 11% interest over 5 years. Took my mother-in-law's brother who's a cunt but gets what he wants out of salespeople and they got it down to £111 a month.

Can be done, but you need to be a bit more resilient about it. Either way if you know the salesman is trying to take you for a mug, haggle. If he knows he can sell a bike at price point X when you offer him X minus 10%, he'll tell you to piss off especially if it's new or in demand.

My dealer knocked £400 off my bike on finance (0%) without me having to ask. Also got a few freebies thrown in and a discount on new boots and lid. Very Happy

Quite the opposite, I'd say, as above - you can even point out that they're going to be getting a kick-back from it, so they can give you a bit more margin.

A lot less likely to get it on 0% finance, but that'll depend how much stock they have to shift - at the start of an offer, unlikely; towards the end of the offer/season and you've got a lot more chance!

I disagree. It's easy to haggle even with finance, you just have to be prepared to walk away.

I recently got 2 quotes for two bikes at separate dealers. At the second dealer I just added on a list of extras I said he'd have to add to prevent me going with the other dealer*.

Timing is everything. Next month is new registration month and I'm buying the month before. The dealers have probably got queues of people ready to buy next month but hardly any now so they're willing to give a little bit more up to get the sale.

*I appreciate I'm talking about a new bike here which is slightly different from a 2nd user one.

My recent vehicle purchases imply that dealers don't give a stuff one way or the other.

So just walk in and get the price down, agree a price with the sales rep. Then when you have shaken hands you can ask about the finance package, they will still get the same % of commission plus any markup still left in the bike so there's no difference between cash and finance really.

If he says he can't do finance at that price ask why not and get him to get the manager out. Ask the manager to give a valid reason why the finance company's cash isn't as good as yours and what difference it makes!

If they don't budge just write your number down and ask them to ring you when they have changed their mind. Ask them how long the bike has been there. If its a while just play on that!

Just be cheeky. The last horse I bought was originally up at £4.5k but reduced to £4k as they know the mrs, I got it for £3.6k, I simply told them I didn't want to pay that much and offered £3.2k they drove me up to £3.6k. Offer low and build up. You can always go higher but not lower once you have made your opening bid!

Good luck
