Here's my stool cory.

Background:
  • Got my full A licence last year, mum and wife both say I'm not allowed a 'big' bike
  • I have zero balance
  • I'm scared of horses
  • I hate being laughed at for failing or looking stupid

So I convince my mum that I really want a motorbike and if I don't then I feel like I'm wasting my life and it's something I really WANT to do (straight from Tefs website that one). She goes for it!! Great. But unfortunately mum is no longer the holdup.

So same conversation goes with the missus. Answer? You get a bike, you get a divorce. Nice.

I keep pushing, I point out that at some point I'm going to end up saying bollocks to this I'm getting one regardless what you say - probably in 10-15 years when I'm in my 40s. Oh and by the way did you know the group of people most likely to die on a bike are men in their 40s who haven't ridden for 10 years!!
Well this causes some strained brain muscles in my wifes head. She turns around and says "Fine, here's a compromise, you can get a motorbike once you've been ice skating and horse riding with me."

Clever girl, she knows full well that I've stated many times that I will NEVER go ice skating. I know I'll fall over, I know there'll be 7 year olds running rings around me and laughing, I know I'll cry. She also knows horses terrify me! Big clumsy looking 3 ton oafs with hooves of death. I turn into Roger briefly to point out the dangers of horse riding but she's having none of it.

So now I'm in a quandry. Do I leave my wife and get a bike? Or risk my life ice skating and horse riding and get a bike? It's a toughy!

tl;dr: Wifes ultimatum says I gotta do something I really don't want to do in order to be allowed a bike.

Answer 3: you just do it and leave the ball in her court.

Your wife wants you to jump through hoops before you can do something?

Only the DSA get that privilege. Very Happy

Both horses and ice skating are fun, though.

Add another condition; she does her cbt first. With a bit of luck, she'll get the bug, forget about her conditions, and encourage you to get a bigger bike Very Happy

Do what she asks, if you cant handle falling over in front of people then you will cry when you drop your bike at a junction.

Horse riding and skating is fun, stop being a baby.

Plus you get big satisfaction from blowing her plan out of the water.

What you could do is find out when the rink will be least busy Wink
Even better, let it go quiet and secretly train till you can skate, then take her Wink

Hold up, she gets to do her dangerous horse riding and shit though? Which is more dangerous, and you don't moan do you?

Man up and buy the bike. Tell her to STFU and get back into the kitchen if she complains.

I've done both before.

Horse riding when I was very young. It's not difficult. Pull left to go left, pull right to go right, pull both to stop. Don't bounce to go fast. That's pretty much all there is to it. Your balls will hate you for it though.

Ice skating is easy peasy. Who cares if you fall over. It's almost impossible to go without seeing first timers clutching to the barriers. Just take a dose of MTFU and chuck yourself in at the deepend of trying to skate. You will more than likely fall more than once. You'll learn quicker though unlike the people who just clutch the barrier the entirety of the time. I can almost guarantee that nobody will be laughing at you.

The first time I went ice skating I just went for it. Half an hour later people were asking me if I'd been before (school trip). I hadn't. I'd been on rollerblades before and I have good balance, that's about it.

They're both enjoyable activities though if you take the dose of MTFU and just do them. They're only enjoyable if you actually put effort in to try and do them though. Otherwise you'll be like the DAS noobie that does 100mph on every straight and 10mph every corner; and we all know where the fun is on a bike. The corner!

Meh, horses aren't that scary, one took a chunk out of the chest of my mums mates son once, he lived Razz

Mr Yaigi hates ice skating too - but he DID try it at least. He fell over. He hurt his skinny arse. Fatten your arse up before going, it'll hurt less Thumbs Up

Honestly if that's all it's going to take to get her to 'agree' for you to have a bike (although I don't get all this control people seem to have over each other in some relationships, if I ever tried to stop Mr Yaigi doing something he wanted to do then I'd just get laughed at. Same goes if he tried to stop me doing something I wanted to do - muchos pointing and laughing would ensue), then get on with it, stop letting your ego get in the way of your ice skating (it's really quite fun), and stop being scared of horses - man up*, i believe is the phrase Thumbs Up

*Oh shit, that's getting banned soon isn't it? Under some discrimination law or suchlike? Best get our use out of it BCF... I know how much you like it Laughing

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

In before Rogerborg Shifty that horse riding is way, way more dangerous than riding a bike.

I take it you've pointed out the financial benefit of being able to commute by bike versus the cost of just owning a horse?

Call her bluff, go skating and horse riding whilst pretending to like it then book up your CBT when you get back. Although if she goes horse riding and bans you from bikes she has some pretty screwed morals. Bikes don't rear up and flip you off because they saw something in the road that made them freak the fuck out. Also bikes don't take a dump on the road and strut off like nothing happened.

to me its either - You get a bike but lose your secured gary.

or - You get to make a fool out of yourself, get somebody to film it, send it off to you've been framed for a bonus to your bike fund. most likely enjoy it, get your bike and keep your gary secured.

no brainer methinks?

It's not so much MTFU with her, I'm fully prepared to just go and buy a bike (in fact I nearly did a few months back), the problem includes me agreeing that we need a new kitchen first. That's not too much of an issue cos I'll just get a cheaper bike Very Happy
Really the bigger problem is on my side, we saw bikes at Goodwood and the wife was quite literally shaking just watching the stuntdude hanging off the pegs spinning round doing a wheelie - same with the superbikes leaning through the bend - I was intending to take her to see motoGP at some point (cos it's awesome and she loves motor racing [cars]) but she is properly scared of even watching someone on a bike. And cos I's in love and shit I don't want her actually going through stress every time I go out on a bike. So I'm properly torn. I had suggested she do a free 'get-on' ride, even on a scooter, but it was an immediate 'no'.

But you're all right about the skating and horses, I do need to just MTFU on those fronts. No idea why I don't worry about dropping a bike in front of people, it doesn't phase me, but the thought of any single person watching me fall on my arse on skates fills me with dread! Probably mostly cos of the kids that are always there. The local place does an adult training half hour so I might book up one of those. Horsey place near me does a half hour one-on-one for £28 as well - seems fair.

So book up skating and horses then tell the missus when we're going, and also the date for my test ride on a ZX10r Very Happy

So she is scared of bikes but not prepared to give it a go or even watch someone else ride? Don't let her fear rule your decisions.

Have you explained to her that this is something that you have set your heart on doing? That you would appreciate her input (beyond setting you targets or saying no) and even if she doesn't support your choice she could try to understand it. You want to involve her as much as possible so that she can see you are taking steps to ensure your safety on the roads.

Maybe see if there is a day at a track that does different types of motor racing; cars, bikes and trucks?

That's basically the route I went down, using Tef's website as a starting point. It worked to an extent because before when I was arguing that it's not that dangerous and it's all the bikers fault she was digging her heels in. So that's nice, that when I tell her it's something I REALLY want to do in my life she actually starts turning around on it.

Maybe I'll push the point that I had a 125 for 6 months and how did she feel about me going out on it - could go the wrong way though!

Ooh also; wife's actually a pussy. She had a massive breakdown during a driving lesson about 4 years ago and went through depression etc. So she can't even drive. Probably another part of the problem is she'd have to give up the lifts I give her everywhere at the moment (or face her own fears one way or the other).
