Picked this little gem up for the sum of £300 with a fresh top end.

https://img5.imageshack.us/img5/8679/x72.jpg

Cleaned carbs which were full of brown gunk, yum.
Also cleaned out the airfilter and changed the gearbox oil.

Sorted out the carb adjustments, was half a turn difference between the 2 carbs idle screws, no wonder the idle was hanging around 3k! .

It has pretty much a non existant front brake so i had the whole assembly off to paint and clean. Turned out to be a seized piston so got that sorted and bolted back on, bled, now feels better at the lever, but wont really tell untill i can give it a proper run....rear brake is fookin good tho!

Id been after one for a few years.

Turns out a mate at my dads workplace had one sitting in the back of his garage he wasnt useing...he wanted it to be used and not turned into a show piece, so i took it off his hands with the promise that he would see it running again.

Only part needed for the MOT, is a front brake light switch (did it even have one when new? theres no wiring for it, but a space in the bracket?). It needs a speedo cable and a front brake, which is still awful even after stripping the whole caliper and master cylinder down, then re bleeding the line (braided).

Been having problems with it smoking more out of the left side, hoping its not a seal gone and its burning gearbox oil, but the plug looks good, just a tad blacker than the right side. Re-set the oil pump, which was way off and not feeding the engine anywhere near enough oil. Was also sticking at half throttle, which explains the shite pick up from idle after giving it some revs Rolling Eyes

Baffles in the pipes are mangled aswell, means i cant get the left one out (might explain the smokescreen) and the right one is pretty coked up! unfortunatly its a tad loud without baffles in (from previous 2smoker experience), we shall see though Razz

Have sprayed the front mudguard black as it was quite rusty and a naff dull grey shade, tempted to do other bits black now instead of chrome! Thumbs Up

Perfect! I want a ~400 4 stroke or a 2-300 2 stroke classic sexy bike like that as a project. Let me know if you come accross any more!

Depending on it's age it probably only needs the rear brake pedal switch for the MOT.

Isn't the rotor under the left casing so if the crank seal had gone, it would be sucking in air rather than oil?

Don't remove the baffles, the engine needs them for the back pressure. As there are no expansion chambers it relies on the baffles.

Mmmmmm, I am feeling sexually aroused already. The X5 and X7 didn't have a front brakelight switch for the UK market (bizarre penny pinching as the mount on the master cylinder is there as well as the connectors on the wiring harness). Surprising how many bits are available either new still, or on ebay at sensible prices. I've collected lots of new old stock bits for my X5 (including a full exhaust system and a pair of fork stanctions) without spending a fortune. Now just to build the bloody thing!

Cheers for that.

Found it a tad strange that the mount was there but no wires!

Tis ready for an MOT then!

Oh and about the baffles, yes i know how a 2stroke works mate, this isnt my first 2stroke project bike Very Happy

Managed to remove the mullered baffle out of the left pipe, couldnt see the holes in the baffle for the carbon build up! Shocked . Thats all cleaned off now.

The manifolds were beyond saving from the rust/crap build up, so have reluctantly done um black. Suprised it doesnt look too bad!

The bike does look better in the pics than in the metal may i say and alot of the bits sprayed black are just to protect it for now. As Bluey says, parts are reasonable enough on egay!

Rear shocks also came off and were also rusty and pitted , so they have gone 'hammerite silver' for now Laughing

Pics and possibly a vid will be up tomorrow Cool

Right.

Failed to get a vid or pics! did more work on it instead.

Pulled the swing arm off and the rear brake assembly (all came off with little fuss!).

Roller bearings are all still spot on, so got to getting rid of the what looked like 20 years worth of (protective?) crud build up, what fun...

Various parts have been painted/sprayed in the protective black coating Laughing

Promise for pics tomoz, if i get it all back together a-ok!

Strangely if you want one I believe I have the correct type coming into stock tomorrow.

Think it was April or August 1983 onwards that bikes required two brake light switches. Could be front or rear.

Been a while since ive done anything with this thread!

Tt now has an MOT.....but no tax, as it is coming up as 'uninsured' on the dvla database Crying or Very sad

The other issue seems to be that its also saying somthing about it hasnt been SORN'ed (or re-taxed? i dont really understand what it says) since '03.....Are they gonna rape me with some fines?

Apart from all that, it runs a treat! The speedo drive is a bit noisey and it smokes like a bitch ( Twisted Evil ) but it pulls well! Have to also sort out why its taking an age to get started from cold....(may take the head and barrel off for a decoke)

When you bought it, you should have declared it SORN. If you didn't you could possibly get fined. I didn't when I first made the mistake. Had a bike for 5 months that wasn't SORNed.

But the bike was sorn'ed previously, just not by me...its only been in my name a month!

Not your problem then. As long as you have a valid SORN letter then you should be fine.

As far as I know a bikes SORN status is removed as soon as the bike changes names.
