Have bought a CB 500 (1998) and when attempting to insure it, was turned down due to needing a certificate of restriction. I'm currently on the 47bhp A2 license.

Now I'm really annoyed. I've been reading about how the 33bhp restriction stuff was mostly about ripping off bikers with expensive restricton kits and certificates that were not actually required by law.

Can someone please explain whether this is the same case with the A2's bhp limit?

The insurer I tried was H&R. Are there companies out there that don't require a certificate? I will also go and double check if the bike is restricted and if not, will likely end up blowing more bloody £££ on some washers and bits. Evil or Very Mad

The same is true. The difference is simply the limit.

Just make up an official looking certificate saying the bike is restricted to 47bhp. It's about as official as it can get anyway!

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

I'm with H&R and they wanted either a Dyno print out or a signed letter head from a garage stating the restrictors have been installed and are working correctly....

I got the latter for £20, paid for them to put the restrictors in (£40 off ebay or there abouts), emailed H&R photocopies... job jobbed

There's a guy on ebay called kickstart_engineering who makes these washer and certificates for a lot less that the "official" ones. He helped me out when it came to restricting my bike.

H&R, my favourite people.

There is no legal requirement for a certificate. You can clearly just tell them "There is no law requiring one" I bet the underwriter is KGM.

Send em the attached.

With regards to insurers, Swinton, ebike and Wicked quotes are 3 that spring to mind.

WickedQuotes have never asked me for a restriction certificate. They give the best quotes when you want to insure a commuter machine, so you should get a decent one.

Although their is nothing legally stating that you must have a restriction certificate, the insurance companies pretty much make up their own requirements. At the end of the day, if you don't agree with their requirements, they aren't legally obliged to provide you with insurance.

Yep, 'tis KGM indeed.

They grilled me about lack of certification over the phone and I told them that I wasn't sure if it had restriction or not and that I would check. Dunno if the 'not required by law' angle will work now. I think I might just ask them to cancel the whole wazoo and go with WickedQuotes or another less frumpy company.

It doesnt matter if it is required by law or not.

If it is part of the terms of your contract with them then you need to provide it or cancel the policy.

Having insured two bikes under wicked quotes they never asked me for a certificate of restriction, the first time round I even rang them and was told personally that I don't need to provide any proof that my bike is restricted.

Just because you insured two bikes, you didn't have to make two posts about it Laughing

Eh, either print off any old crap and send it in, or give your business to people who don't assume that you're a liar.

Although they do get partial credit for even acknowledging that there are different categories of motorcycle license. Thinking

I had a fault accident. My insurance company still didn't ask for proof of restriction or anything of the like.

First I've seen of this photo. Is there a thread on the rebuild somewhere?

Also, just make an official looking certificate in microsoft word. Use your mate's name and call it Joe Bloggs Bike Services or something and give their phone number/address etc on the letter head. Might look a bit suspicious if you use your own details. Laughing
