as title really. If I plug the hard drive into one of the hidden 3.0 ports on the back it works fine, but any 2.0 ports don't work. What I find strange though is that I'm reasonably certain it used to work and also every other computer can provide enough power including laptops.
Anyone know if this is fixable?

Something like this might work, not sure what to search for.

I did have one of them, until I shut it the boot of a car and snipped the wire. I'm just thinking there must be a BIOS setting or something that I have changed causing this. Seems really strange that the most powerful desktop in the house can't provide enough power through the USB port

Depends on the chip set of the USB device. Some of them don't like only having 500mA to play with. Equally, your PC may not be giving the full 500mA from that USB port. Have you tried any different sockets on the computer?

Doesn't usb3 provide more than 500mA?

a powered hub provides more juice than a usb port usually.

I have tried all USB2 ports. USB 3.0 ports work but I know that they provide more power than USB2.
That being said, the hard drive runs at .41A @ +5V, so a USB2 port should power it.

I had the exact same issue with my verbatin external portable drive, used to work fine but now won't power fully with 1 usb, you can get those dual usb cables from ebay for cheap, seems to work with mine again now.

PS it probably isn't the hard drive but your pc that has the issue, my drive works fine with 1 usb in other pc's

If you've got an external hdd with a 7,200rpm drive inside it then it requires two USB ports to fully power it up, as the higher speed drive requires more power except the standard at 5,400rpm drive will work with one USB port instead.

USB has much nigher data throughput compared to a USB 2 port plus it gives a little bit more power because of that instead.

I certainly do know that Samsung Kies desktop software for their mobile phones has a conflict with USB external devices not allowing it to be properly recognised at times by the system i.e. USB flash drives and maybe even possibly some external drives could be effected.

If it works on USB 3 port then so much the better and maybe it gives that little bit extra from that port to power it up fully it is a 7,200rpm drive that is external?

nope, it's 5400.
I ended up taking the header ports off of the front panel and reconnecting them. Now seems to power the hard drive on 3 out of the 4 ports. I'm happy with that

If you download crystal disk info and select the advanced features option from the function drop down, you might find the drive has apm/aam options that can be adjusted to make the drive operate at a lower power draw and noise level.

Being a usb it won't hurt performance the set everything to it's lowest settings as you are limited by the bus anyway, but it might be enough of a reduction in load for the other usb ports to be able to power it.

If you want to eliminate this problem altogether you could try one of these, I've had one for a few years they work really well especially if you have not many usb headers on the board.

Link is just the first one I found with a picture on it.
