Are there any route planners that allow you to plan a ride/drive without touching a motorway?

I was wanting to go see some friends in Wales but cant ride on the motorways and need an alternative route.

I also normally use the RAC one and in my experience of using it, I've had no problems and it's a good planner and actually gets stuff right and you can tell it stuff like "no toll roads" and stuff which is useful for avoiding the M6 toll road.

I do always look over the route and check it on an actual map book so I can check that it has given me the best route or so I can look into doing something else on the same trip or just to see the thing on a complete map but generally I've had no problems with the RAC one and it gets Thumbs Up from a happy user.

I normally use https://www.multimap.com then use the 'directions' link up the top. Alternatively, get a copy of autoroute from somewhere.

I would steer well clear of multimap for directions. I remember Mike once got some from there to my house. They were so wrong it was laughable.

Long journey's via A Roads where you're not familiar with the route. Sounds like you'll be forever checking your route.

Try one of those GPS systems. My mate's got one (from Costco, under £500) and says it's great. It's got a holder which you fix onto your forks. The GPS comes on and off that. The instructions are fed via a loudspeaker in his lid via a dedicated cable.

You can plan your route (via scenic routes) from your living room and save it before setting off.

I'd buy one but that would spoil the whole 'look' of a cruiser.
