A cat C is classed as Uneconomical to repair. As long as there is no damage to the bit you need it should be ok.
Cat A and B write offs are not allowed back on the road, normally cus the frame is cracked or very badly damaged. A cat A write-off should be made in to a nice cube shaped paperweight.

Cat A Should be crushed never to see the light of Day Again.

Cat B Can ONLY be used for spares and must never be put back on the road.

Cat C Can be put back on the road but must pass a safety inspection and pass a new MOT.

Cat D as above but mostly cosmetic damage etc.

Cat F is Fire Damaged.

Hope that helps,

Craig.

Category A is not allowed back on the road (either the engine or frame/ chassis numbers), but they can't really tell if the bits of the bike get used, but you're not even allowed to take the vehicle away from the police storage yard as a rule of thumb. Normally they make it a category A after it has been involved in a fatal accident.

Category B is not allowed back on the roads either, but is not as bad a category A, I don't know off the top of my head if it can have parts taken off it. I believe that a category B is allowed to be made into like a trackbike or whatever

Category C & D are just damaged, they're cheaper to write off than to repair, but they can be put back on the roads, and it has to pass an MOT type test I believe to show that the repairs to it are safe enough. (Someone with more knowledge in stuff like this will be able to fill in more details.)

So to sum it up briefly, C & D are okay to buy with the plans of putting it back on the roads, but look into what you be needing to do to it and how much it will cost before buying the bike.
