Hi guys,

Just a quick question, if I bought a big bike (600cc) got it insured, MOT'd and taxed, could I have lessons on it with an instructor?
My mates got a 600cc for sale and I like it. If I was to buy it how would I go about having my lessons on it? I live in Preston and there are a few schools around here. One guy charges £30 an hour which seems ok. Would any instructors/schools not like a learner using their own bike. The bikes a bit retro, but my mate has looked after it really well and I think it would be good to learn on the bike I intend to ride after passing. Whoops another thing, what do test centres make of the older bikes being used?

Sorry to bombard you all with questions Smile

Thanks in advance for any help, really great forum

You will really struggle to find an insurance comany to take you on without a full licence, and if you do it will cost a fortune.
What about getting your mate to insure it and put you as a named driver?
Or whats wrong with using the school bike, you dont really want to drop your onw bike training on it, and you probably wont save all that much using your own.

It would be far far easier and cheaper to simply buy the bike off your mate, then do your lessons on the schools bike, then just insure the bike you bought off you friend after you have a full liscense

Otherwise it's a huge ball ache for everyone. You'd have to buy And insure it which would cost a fortune with no liscense, then do your lessons which would be akward as I would guess the school would need to add you to their policy to cover you during lessons (could be wrong) then after you pass you'd have to alter your insurance anyway

You'd probably also find anyone willing to insure you before passing will charge a fortune before and after passing your test.

Best bet, just use the schools bike Abd insure yours after Smile

It is possible to get insurance with only a provisional licence reasonably cheaply. I managed to insure a zx6r for £250 tpft with only a provisional licence with h & r insurance. BUT they stipulated in the insurance that in order for my insurance to be valid I had to pass my tests and gain a full licence within 45 days of the policy starting.

I did it about 4 years ago with an er5, can't remember exact prices or what insurer it was but it wasn't expensive (otherwise I wouldn't have done it).

I was struggling with the school's bikes so bought the er5 and adjusted it to suit me. Some days the instructer would meet me at my house, other days I would get a friend with a full licence to ride it over to the school Wink

Yup, there are some insurers who actually understand how things work. I believe that Bikesure will also cover your on a provisionaL.

Talk to the local training schools first though, it'll be dependent on their willingness to send an instructor out to you.
