Hey,

I'm setting up a home network in a few weeks (ish) once I start uni, get a new laptop and eventually (In the next 6 months or so) get a gaming PC. I'm a bit of an idiot with networking so I'd like some help from those who are infinitely more knowledgeable than I on the matter.

Basically at the moment, we have a completely wireless network (Virgin Media with one of their Super hub abominations) that the PCs etc connect to. I have an old router laying around (which is actually a decent netgear one, but the powers that be who pay the internet insisted on the virgin one then complained when it went to shit) so I wanted to create my own "private" network within a network. I'm going to have the above laptop, gaming PC plus my current netbook (which is shit) as an ubuntu file server, basically just a secondary backup for my university work and to host my images and music. It's got an Ethernet port so that's all good. I'm likely to be using Samba unless somebody has a better solution Thumbs Up Essentially I want my netbook server accessible ONLY to me, not to the entire household.

Could I run an ethernet cable from the superhub downstairs, up to my office and into the secondary router to give me wired speeds, but keep the secondary network private from the rest? I don't particularly like the idea of having it all open (Like my privacy, and no I'm not a sex-fiend or a paedo Laughing) and frankly nobody else needs to access it anyway. I'd like to be able to access it from outside the house as well (remote connection via a VPN - worth making my laptop into a private VPN or connecting something like a Raspberry Pi?).

I hate waiting years for it to transfer over the slowest network known to mankind so I figured wiring that shit up was the way to go, and I work with a lot of HD media etc so as you can imagine it gets tedious as fuck.

Cheers guys.

yes, if you know what you're doing with the spare router

otherwise get an old box with 2 network cards, and install pfsense on it

internet->router->your router(or other firewall box)->switch->stuff

filesharing either samba or nfs, but nfs support on windows is pretty much bollocks, fileshare permissions take forever to setup on samba, but it's simple if you only want full/no access for people

vpn either run off the file server or if using pfsense it's pretty much builtin

You can put the superhup in modem mode and then use your other router for dhcp and wireless Ect Thumbs Up

I don't which is why I asked for help Laughing

Rather not have to buy anything extra (apart from more ethernet cabling) as I've got all the bits I need (I think) - do I need a switch or will my router do that for me? It's obviously got the standard WAN socket then 4 Ethernet sockets as well (plus a USB port for attaching a NAS but I'm not really interested in that at the mo).

Would that make a difference to the network I set up (as in does that mean the other people can access it?)

As you can see I'm a proper networking tard so all these terms are a bit overwhelming Laughing

I would be keeping the SUperhub running with 5Ghz band and the other one on the 2.4Ghz.

You do not need a switch, the router will do that for you. You also don't need anything extra.

Could I then have two SSIDs? To be honest I was hoping to run a wire upstairs, have all my devices wired to the router anyway. Quicker plus the superhub is on the front of the house, I'm at the back.

Can any device use 5GHz?

Edit: Just looked, can only choose 2.4GHz OR 5GHz, not both. Also Modem Mode disables wireless which I can't do - need it for downstairs

2nd Edit: Bollocks to it, I'm just going to extend my network upstairs by running a cable upstairs and then just networking the stuff together with my 2nd router. Stuff the server idea, I'll just backup to a hard disc Laughing

yes, you can have two SSD's. A lot of the newer stuff like the iPad/Dell XPS/Sony Vaio all work quickly on the 5Ghz, while older, less premium stuff like galaxy s2, iPhone 4, xbox run on the 2.4Ghz.
For some reason, the cable that I have run upstairs doesn't work at full gigabit speed. Either a break in a pair or possibly running too close to the mains power. But the 5Ghz is sufficiently fast as to stream 720p video over it

5ghz is good enough to stream raw blu rays assuming you've not got too much interference going on.

Try Hamachi allows you to create a secure P2P VPN netwrok between computers for gaming etc, can be used across the web too

free and v.simples

https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/

or use a firewall to only allow incoming/outgoing connections to your own machines using static IP's or mac addresses
