You've got to try some on first. I bought a new helmet the other week, tried on some AGV ones and they just didn't fit my head well. Tried Shoei and loved the fit.

Look here.

Try some on. You should easily be able to get one for <£100.

I bought my last two for <£100 combined. They're about due replacement though due to general mistreatment and abuse.

I'd buy pretty much any brand so long as it fitted nicely, then try and focus on not crashing so you don't need to find out if it's any good or not. But a good fit is important if for nothing else than making it quieter!

Buy what fits you best. Go to a shop and try on loads, and get the staff to give you some advice. It's far too easy to end up with the wrong helmet, something you thought fitted you but actually gives you a headache after five minutes.

There are so many brands out there, it would be difficult to recommend any of them because there's no guarantee they would fit you properly. Last time I bought a helmet I was planning to spend £150, but the only one that fitted me 100% turned out to be a £350 Arai!

Like others have said - buy the one that fits you the best. Don't necessarily look at brand names, but have a butchers at the SHARP rating.

When you put a lid on you should pull the chin straps apart, stick your noggin in and it should be fairly comfortable. No hamster cheeks and if you put both hands on the back of the lid and push forwards you should be able to stick a finger in the gap between the padding and your forehead. No gap means its too tight, if you can stick your hand in there its too loose. Ask sales staff to help you out though.

As for extra things to look out for, I find my Shark internal flipdown sunvisor is very handy. You might want to look for a visors that have pinlock posts already fitted too.

I wouldn't buy a visor that wasn't pinlock ready.

Materials? Got to break it to you, they're all a bucket of EPS foam in a plastic shell. Just plastic, plastic with glass fibres, plastic with carbon fibres, they all do the same thing, to much the same degree. Some studies have found that the cheaper ones actually do a better job in a survivable impact.

More money gets you a lighter, smaller helmet, where the shell is more closely matched to the inside size. Again, this is not necessarily to your benefit if you bin it.

Try them on, buy the one that fits best in your budget and has the toys that you want, that's really it.

It's my first and only helmet, but my HJC IS-16 is great for all the same reasons. Just got my pinlock visor and I'll be putting that on this weekend.

Shocked £90!!!

I paid £250 for mine a couple of years back. Agreed though - definitely a decent lid. Might just get another one at that price.

https://www.jsaccessories.co.uk/brands/kbc.html

Using a KBC helmet the past year, by far the best one i've ever owned and only cost me about 80 quid IIRC.

Its the Laguna VR2 i've got which has been replaced by newer designs but the range in general are all decent - worth checking sizings in a shop first whatever you buy generally though many brands fit differently across the size range Thumbs Down
