In the process of sorting out my old ybr 125 as ive got a new bike. It being my learner bike I didn't treat it the best and have came off a few times back when i first got it. Got it in quite bad shape too.

The downpipes are pretty damn rusty, not to sure on the best way to get them sorted. I have tried some stuff called Optiglanz which works great for getting rid of a lot of stuff, however it doesnt seem to budge anything on mine.

I don't want to sell a piece of c**p to someone, is there any other ways that I can try to get rid of it?

I can show pictures if that helps.

What's the finish supposed to be, black paint, chrome?

If it's black paint then rub them down or wire brush them, then paint with high temperature paint. Either take the pipe off to prevent overspray or mask everything up if you don't fancy snapping the exhaust bolts.
If it was chrome then buy some silver high temperature spray, at least it'll look tidy enough.

Luckily they are meant to be black.

Tried using a wire brush however it just doesn't seem to move. Is there anything you can recommend to use to "loosen" it?

The problem with loosening the rust is that you may inadvertently make a hole in the pipe, it's really easy to do.

Your best bet is to wire brush the pipes and paint them black, perhaps many light coats will make it look better.

Will get some wire brushes tomorrow and have a good go at it and see how much rust I can get off. I'll also try and get a picture for you too see how bad it has got.

Or if you're lazy like me, it's pretty easy to make a homemade electrolysis set up and you'll most likely have pretty much all you need to do it already.

I've done a couple of exhaust headers in mine with very good results both times.

A picture would help.

If the rust is structural, stop messing with it and just paint over what's there. Otherwise, get a wire brush drill bit and give it 240 volts of elbow grease.

I appreciate your point about not wanting to pass on a problem to the next owner, I'm a mug like that too and put far too much unneeded work into my bikes when I sold them. At some point though you do have to acknowledge that you're selling a used bike, and a 125 at that, and any reasonable seller has to expect that it's not mint.
