First off I'd like to say I've never owned or had planned on owning a selfie stick.

However I have been taking my partner pillion a lot recently and have tried capturing us both on camera, by unclipping from the helmet and holding at arms length. But is still fairly close to us, so it either our heads/torso or the bike on its own.

Any one know of the legalities of giving the pillion a camera on a selfie stick to capture something more like this:

I honestly thought selfie sticks were a joke when first seeing them for sale online. That'll be the next step in human evolution, one really long arm for taking selfies Rolling Eyes

Is it not a better idea to get off the bike and take a photo of the two of you?

I think taking selfies on the move is tempting fate. Choose life not snapchat

They're tying to practically give them away at the local garage, I still think it's -100 man points for even taking a selfie nevermind buying shit to help with that..

Then again I am a dinosaur.

Is this for real? Selfies while riding? Why, what's the point? Is it to impress someone who doesn't ride bikes. I must be getting old because the last thing on my mind when riding is selfies or even phones, it's riding.

Its not for a Selfie, and not to impress any one else.
More on the lines of, rather than have my Drift camera stationary on my helmet, it it was on a stick and in the hands of my pillion would it be legal.
The only reason i was thinking of it was so we could capture more of both of us on the bike for memories sake, and also have some totally different camera angles of the ride, not just my POV with her never in it unless we are getting on or off the bike.

Don't think I made it clear in my first post this wasn't for my phone for selfies, it was for my Drift camera for recording our ride outs.

If you want some keepsakes of your rides, why not just ask the hospital staff for copies of your xrays?

With a gopro style camera it's much easier to hold it steady with the handle thing which the stick telescopes into - less than a foot long. They are inexpensive enough to try and see how it goes.
They aren't only for doing selfies - for example you can easily hold it down near the ground or above other people's heads, over walls etc

I can't see any problem with the pillion using it, rider could too in some quieter locations. Due to the very wide angle it looks longer than it is, they are typically only about 3 feet long.

So how exactly does her holding a foot long piece of equipment with a little camera on, equate to xrays exactly?

Shes not going to be sat on the tank, or on my head so it isnt going to change the way the bike feels or how i ride/control it from when she is on the back usually.

So how in your oh so infinite wisdom, do you think her holding it will make me any more likely to crash?

Without wishing to enter the debate too much I will say that ANYTHING that causes you or your pillion to risk being distracted will make you more likely to crash.

This, if you absolutely desperately need photos of 2 people whose faces you can't see riding a bike either google them, or get a suction mount on your fairing and point it at yourself.

Jesus. If my pillion was doing that (as in the OP's video) they'd be left at the side of the road.

That was pretty much the standard of driving in Iran when I was there, even without singing and selfies.

That's our Snowie on 'er Bludi-Guzzi 'in action'.

Was taken by me on bike in front, hence my pannier dominating the top left hand corner of the frame, with a rather old 35mm film camera, you have to wind on between each frame with a little thumb-wheel on corner.

Go-Pro's?! Selfie Sticks?!?! Shocked i-phones?!?!?!?!? Pah! You lot have it sooooooo EASY with all this shit, yet still seem determined to make it SO hard for yourselves!

Riding 'one handed' and taking photo's, similarly one handed with a very manual film camera is a much practised technique of old! And quite good fun!

Oh! the Excitement of 'shooting blind' with a mild wide angle lens, without composing in the view-finder; and the anticipation, of having to wait until you had finished the 36 frames of a film, and had it developed at the chemists before you saw what you got! (lots of crap usually!) Laughing

This one, on the other hand, belongs to my daughter, and is one of her portfolio for her A-Level photo course, shot from the bunny-seat of my bike last year with her daft-phone.... apparently her tutor grumbled about her not using a tripod.. when she explained she was on the back of a moving motorbike, though, she just walked away shaking her head!

Couple of year's back, we met up with her Gran & little bother in Wales, who were following us down the Great Orm in Llandudno. We got to the bottom & I pulled in and waited for them to catch up.. and I waited, and I waited, and eventually the daughter had to 'phone them to find ot where they had got to. Gran explained "I HAD to pull in.. bludi girls was climbing around all over the back of that damned bike, taking photo's of us!" and the looked at me with wonder, as to why I didn't find this at all concerning!

If you aren't 'daft' and the pillion isn't leaning off the bike waving thier arms around as you try gong round a bend at 70 per, or anything, it isn't exactly a 'hazard' to take photos from a bike!

I have had 'bad' pillions squirming around randomly at the wrong moments, without a camera or anything 'distracting'. Good rider-pillion partnership; they trust you to do the riding, you trust them not to do anything too daft on the bunny, and daughter can shuffle about taking pictures, texting her boy-friend, drinking a bottle of pop, even reading a damn book on a long boring motorway haul!

But selfie stick & an action cam? Well, if you like lots and lots and lots of wobbly video to wade through, rather than a few good 'stills'? I suppose that's your call... I wouldn't say it was an utterly ridiculous idea.. though I would be a tad concerned to loose the camera if the pillion stuck it out into the breeze or oncoming traffic at the wrong moment!

I was thinking about this.

I'm assuming you can only take a video or set a timer to take a photo and then hopefully get the selfie stick in the right position.

How would you push the button to take the photo when the camera is like 3ft away from you?

Ok, I actually see your point here.
It wouldn't be a constantly in use item, but there have been times where the surrounding countryside has been lovely, and the roads quiet, where it would have been nice to capture a kind of 'ride by' shot, without setting camera up at side of road and riding past then back to retrieve camera.

It would be in a bag most of the time with a cheap gopro copy camera and used when we wanted/needed it. not in constant use.

And I've also had bad pillions before too, but she knows when she can move about and how much etc...
Don't think it would be any different to her adjusting her seating position or moving her visor etc...

Can set the Drift cameras (and probably most other action cameras) to take a photo every 1/2/5/10 seconds until you stop it, or just press record and away you go.

If you've got a clean licence how about blasting past a forward facing speed camera. Only cost a 100 quid. You'll need a number plate strapped to the front though or they won't send you your picture..
