Hi,

I would appreciate if anyone who is experienced in painting bikes could help me. My problem is basically that paint/primer is somehow getting under the first layer by capillary action and causing a wrinkling/cracking effect.

I had some paints made up at an auto factors to paint some damaged fairings that I had repaired. The priming went well and the first couple of coats of the base paint went well too except for one small wrinkled blemish. I took this back with 1200 grit, however it went down several layers to the plastic to end up getting it smooth again.
I attempted to re-do the area by applying some new primer (ran out of the first so had to settle with Halfrauds as it was a Sunday), however the problem got worse and has now spread.

I have attached some images in an attempt to explain better. The first image shows where I have taken the paint back to remove the wrinkling, which ends at the plastic. Here you can also see the original blue colour, the initial grey primer, the white pearl basecoat in addition the the new orange primer.
In the second image you can see the wrinkling effect in the orange primer that I described. It looks as though it is occurring by paint getting under the original blue paint.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this? If so what was the cause and how can I remedy it as it is really starting to annoy me!

Thanks.

looks like the paints are reacting with the previous coat,

more common when mixing different solvent bases.

Flat it all off, and isolate. Then prime and prep over the top of the isolator.

Don't attempt to keep flattening it and respraying you will use a lot of paint and it can also take a couple of days for reactions to show

Thanks guys. Yeah I had tried a few times to keep flattening it before repainting it before realising that it would just keep doing the same thing.

Thanks for the advice, excuse my ignorance though but what do you mean by isolating?

Use a different primer, two paints are reacting with each other.

It could also be reacting under the primer depending on what paint is being used and what was underneath.

Search Barcoat Isolator. It provides a totally neutral layer between old paint and your new paint preventing any reaction between the 2
