Hi,

I'm after some form of carrying capacity for the CB-1. Currently using a rucksack but it's falling apart and bored of taping the bottom up each time I need to use it. I'd also like to start doing some longer road trips on the bike and would like something that I could rely on.

I've had a search around the forums and tail packs seem to be the way forward, a topbox is overkill and a tankbag seems like it'd just get in the way for day-to-day use and refueling.

I'd like something that I could use on and off the bike, and I'm fairly keen on the Kriega US-20. I've read nought but good stuff about the brand, but am reluctant to drop 20% of the amount I paid for the bike on an extravagant bag. I could potentially get the US-30 but it seems overkill, yet it's only a little bit more than the US-20.

Has anyone got any alternatives or suggestions? I'm aware of a messenger bag that's been posted before, but I'm not entirely sure that's what I'm after as I'd prefer not to have it strapped to my person when on the bike.

Many thanks!

Hein gericke. Drybags are on offer at the moment. Attach them with bungees. Spend the saved monies on beer and hookers Thumbs Up

I found I got used to tank bags very quickly.

They should easily lift up to refuel.

I sometimes get a bit paranoid with tail packs - always patting behind me to check it's still there, but with a tank bag it's between your arms.

I'd also consider a proper 'hard' top box with a rack. Find these very useful for daily use - chuck your helmet in when wandering around town, shopping in on the way home. You can still then attach bags on the rear seat to them or use a tail pack as well if you want to take more stuff.

I both like and dislike tank bags. They can feel a little intrusive, but I like having any valuable items right there with me.

My tank bag can be unzipped from the magnets which turns it in to a rucksack. However you'll really want to have it done up tightly. Always make sure to do the safety strap up on the tank bags though. My tankbag came off at the wrong side of 100 (private road, of course) and thankfully that safety strap stopped it going anywhere Very Happy

Tail packs are quite good too, but as G says, I did keep patting behind me to check that it was still there. My tail pack has a strap on it too, so you can wear it like a picnic bag over your shoulder.

I'd agree with G and go for the top box as the most useful solution. I'm grabbing myself one once I can afford it and I own a tank bag and a tail pack.

Another similar dry bag option https://www.ewetsuits.com/acatalog/Dry-Boxes-dry-bags-uk.html

Top box isn't really overkill. You'll fill the space pretty quickly.

I thought a tank bag may impinge on everyday riding. It really doesn't. Only on full lock can I feel it with my thumbs, though my seating position of the ZZR might help this.

It's great to have your stuff right there, and the see through zippy bit lets me keep directions in it. It's big enough for my lid and can be unzipped and used a back pack when off the bike

Miltec 50 rucksack on Amazon. Use mine on the back of the biker everyday. It's good. Less than £30.

I borrowed my OH tank bag for a week or so, and hated it! Might be because I'm little enough as it is, but hey! Got a tail bag, and I love it! It's zipped on, and attached under the seat and with bungees. It unzips to form one of those backpack thingies above. Really good when you get a few bits and bobs from the shops too.

Downside: Makes it a bugger to get on the bike as i can't swing my leg over the top of it!

Looking to get a topbox soon instead, and as has been said before, it's somewhere to put the helmet too Very Happy

I had one of those givi rip off copies - 52l, was like £40 or something. Worked fine.

Never had an issue with tank bag magnets coming off. I don't use the strap, done 150 plus no problems.

Neither had I before, and I've covered circa 3000 miles with a tank bag on, but there's a first time for everything. Very Happy

Although an Oxford item not doing its job properly is hardly a huge surprise.

Only issue I've had with a tank bag is when one of the magnets picked up a nail from the floor only and didn't realise till I see the scratches on the tank!

The problem is it's a CB-1 he has. Racks are very hard to come by for them (very very rare 2nd hand and expensive new) That being said, I wouldn't fanny about if I was him, I'd just dig deep and buy a rack and cheap top box too. (about £200 in total for rack and box). You'll be able to salvage about 100 of that back when reselling them separately from the bike.

Superb, many thanks for the response chaps.

Despite the favour nudging towards a top box, I'm just not keen for a few reasons. One is trying to get one to fit on the CB1, and t'other is I'd like something that I can attach to the bike, then use as a bag when I get to the other end. I'm also somewhat shallow and the tailbag just looks more sleek!

However I am somewhat swayed by a tank bag, shall have a shop around. Am still leaning towards a tail pack. FIBob - what one are you using? Shall also check out the dry bags.

When I went to the BCF BBQ, I managed to get all my kit (tent, sleeping bag, self inflating mat, 6 pack of beer and 2 sets of spare clothes) INTO my kriega R30 and US20. I'm a strong advocate of Kriega stuff, and I firmly believe that they are worthwhile investments! I've had my US20 for 4 years and has never let me down! In fact, I effectively an a US40 for week holidays - it was 2xUS10's lashed onto the sides of the US20. It was great because it also meant that you can stick your tent and sleeping bag across that whole module. I did 2x download festivals like that!

Cheers! How much of that went into the US20? If I do go for the Kriega stuff, it's weighing up whether I go for the US30 or US20.

I've read you can use the US20 as a tankbag? Though if I'm going to go that route there are plenty cheaper tankbags.

I used to take a tank bag for long journeys just to lean on it, makes a comfy pillow on the motorway stretches.

Kreiga tail packs for me Thumbs Up

https://p1.bikepics.com/2013/08/20/bikepics-2589404-full.jpg

Could have got a fair bit more in them too, but was only away for a few days. Work just as well on my GSXR6 too Thumbs Up (but you need the pillion seat obviously). The 20 also comes with clips and a shoulder strap for wandering about with.
