Hi all,

On two consecutive journeys on Saturday about a mile an a half in my oil light came on for no apparent reason. My level is good (and being a Yamaha of the right era it is a level not pressure light). On Sunday I did my usual 40 odd mile round trip commute without a sign of the light.

Is is possible all of my oil somehow buggered off to the top of the engine or something (maybe not returning or something?), or is the sensor just playing around?

Is the outside of the switch shorting out on something?

Usually oil lights switches are a bit like radiator fan switches in that the bulb is live all the time and earths through the switch. As such, any short circuit between the switch and the bulb would make the bulb light up.

Had this on my KLE. Oil light was flickering randomly, turns out it was the exhaust pushing against the outside of the oil pressure switch. Took me AGES to find because it only did it when the sump bash plate was in place.

I had a similar problem with an intermittent warning light, it was the oil pressure sensor. I'd checked the wiring first, it was good so I took a £20 punt on a new sensor.

On both my FJ1200s the oil light would come on when riding up steep hills. It's a heart stopping moment the first time it happens.
