Afternoon all,

I'm looking at getting a pair of earplugs for longer trips. At the moment I have some of the foam ones, pretty crap to be honest, unless I put my lid on straight away they fall out.

I'm thinking at getting some moulded ones, but no idea where would be the best place, and what type I would be looking for.

I've seen Ultimate Ear and there are some for £170! Also some for £50ish and £70ish.

Can anyone recommend any?

Thanks.

The £10 silicone putty eBay jobbies seem to do the job adequately based on the reviews I've read.

That said, £170 buys a fuckload of orange 3M disposables, which are my current preferences.

If they are falling out then you aren't putting them in properly. It's not just a case of resting them in your ear.

You have to compress it, pull the top of your ear *up* with the other hand, and insert. Further than you normally would, but enough so that you can still get at some of the plug to remove. I probably insert it so it leaves 2mm or so exposed. It will be a strange sensation initially, but it works. Im sure there will be something on youtube etc, but it makes a massive difference.

I much prefer my moldex pura-fits over the mould-it-yourself solution which barely blocked anything. Also use the moldex 'spark plug' which have a slightly different shape but only SNR 35.

Moldex pura-fit have a noise reduction rating of SNR 36. It would be worth asking ulitmateears etc suppliers to see what their estimate is- If its less than SNR 30 I really wouldnt bother. The SNR scale isn't linear, either, so SNR36 is more than one better than SNR35.

I've never been able to get any brand of in-ear plugs to stay in securely, no matter how much I roll and tug and wiggle and shove. Maybe I should lube? Thinking

Silicone putty, £3.40 delivered. Enough for 2 pairs of plugs, I moulded one pair round some ear-buds for bangin' choons, and am wearing the other pair right now to take the edge off of the open plan office bedlam.

Are you putting them in correctly?

Ensuring your fingers are clean, roll the earplug between your fingers until it's as thin as you can make it.

Then reach around the back of your head with your other hand and pull on your ear. This is to straighten the ear canal a bit. Then stick the thin wisp of an earplug into your ear canal and hold it there with your finger until the earplug expands. The closing off of sound should almost be like going under water.

I have bought the Ultimate-ear ear plugs that were £170 and its the best £170 i have spent.
they totally stop the wind noise plus they are headphones at the same time and they are custom moulded to my ear.
if you do go for these you will need to see a nurse and have your ears syringed (which is a jet of warm water gently sprayed into your ear, NOT A NEEDLE WITH A SYRINGE ON IT), so a custom mould can be created of your ear.

I've got some of the disposable ones from eBay. Got about 30 for £2.

Do the job for me. I'd be interested in some moulded type ones that were also headphones.

Just recently bought 200 pairs of Laser lite ear plugs and I am impressed.

Miles better than some orange cylinder ones I had before.

- The foam is soft so easy to get the plug into the ear canal
- Sound reduction is very good
- Very comfortable due to the shape and soft foam.

My ear plugs are like the Ultimate ones, but they cost £70 a few years ago. They have a noise filter in them so that I can hear my intercom, but nothing else. Had them done at one of the bike shows that I went to. The best £70 spent.

I just buy a bag of disposable ones from Halfords (Oxford I think). They do the job.

Find a place that makes hearing aid molds, they might be able to help you.

My friend uses these sort of gel silicone ones and is very fond of them.

The foam disposable ones block out more noise than reusable or custom ones, when used correctly. They are cheaper too.

Find a brand and shape that fit you well and buy in bulk.

If you need monitors, then you could try some comply tips on your existing set of earphones. Failing that you've got the expensive route of custom monitors.

The ultimate ears I have, have got the monitors moulded into them.
The sound input from my gps/comms is now less than 10% of what I used to use when I had external speakers in my helmet & using std earplugs.

I use the pink/yellow ones on the right here.

https://www.motorcycleinfo.co.uk/resources/6795/assets/images/Safety/hearing/motorcycle_ear_plugs.jpg

Pinch the ends into a point, stick it in the earhole and rest the end on the little 'shelf' in your ear so they don't pop out. Works every time and brilliant for when I've got that afternoon work headache occasionally.

Tinnitus runs in my family so i take ear protection very seriously.

In all seriousness custom ones are a complete waste of money .
I use E.A.R SNR 39 earbuds .
Disposable cheap and they are incredibly effective as well as being very comfy.

I replace mine with a new pair every few days as do you really want to keep sticking the same grotty earplugs in day after day ??

They are made of a very soft expanding foam and once inserted are the most effective ear protection i have ever used.

20 pairs is enough to a few last months for £3.25 haha

I have used them for everything from motorcycles to work at a fireworks display.always worked great Smile.

These are the ones I use (Halfords sells these too). I find them all-day comfortable and very effective.

However, my wife can't wear them. They don't go in and when she eventually does stuff them in somehow, they fall right out. It was a source of tension in our marriage that I insisted (as others have done here) that "you just aren't putting them in right", but after a while I've come to the conclusion that they just don't suit some ears. My wife has tiny ears and I don't think the canal is long enough for these to get a grip...

When she wears earplugs now, which isn't often, she uses these clear putty things that you mold over the ear canal. They don't look very effective. I've resigned myself to having to speak up in our golden years.

I'm not sure why it's such a hard concept for some people: It doesn't need to "bother" you for your hearing to be destroyed. I used to hear this from other musicians when I played bass in bands around Boston (U.S.). "It doesn't bother me." Now many of these people are wearing hearing aids.
