Dropped the oil in my CG last night to change the clutch

before i got the bike it had been standing for years, so when i got it i put fresh stuff in.

The new oil has been in for about 400 miles, when i dropped it last night the oil was filthy an smelt a bit like petrol

is that normal for a CG of doom?

Normally means oil is seeping past the pistons rings.

Not sure, but my brothers old YBR was like that, oil smelled of petrol a lot but he did a lot of start stop short journeys.
If your getting good economy and it runs ok I would not panic.

Just keep running it and see how everything balances out after a couple of thousand miles. A machine is an organism and reacts a certain way to being left idle for years. Give it a chance.

If it suddenly goes haywire though, like in a significant way, stop running it. Obviously.

Oil will go black immediately after an oil change if the previous oil was black. Nothing you can do about it unless you want to strip and clean the engine and nothing to worry about either.

The petrol smell is a bit disconcerting though, that points to a problem with the float valve in the carburettor. Get into the habit of turning off the fuel tap when the engine isn't running.
