I would like to let everyone know about my free phone app for bikers

I developed it with the help of forum members over at xrv.org.uk, where I am a moderator. The app, called the-Zebra because I ride a zebra-striped bike, helps you track spending on your motorbike and set reminders so you never forget to MOT your bike or change your oil again.

It works on iPhone https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/the-zebra/id608043554?ls=1&mt=8
and Android. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.the_zebra.android.app

When you fill up with petrol the-Zebra will convert your litres and total spending to miles per gallon (MPG). It shows what you got out of that last tankful and your overall average.

You can set a reminder for either your bike service as a whole, or a separate reminder for oil, spark plugs, air filter and other individual service items. You can also set reminders to check your tyres. You can set reminders by date or by mileage. You can record your spending by individual item or overall service too.

You can use the app to store information about your bike’s insurer and broker and, if you want, keep your policy number handy in case you ever need to exchange insurance details with a “sorry mate I didn’t see you” case driver.

I’m adding to the app regularly, so let me know what else you want the app to do. One of the first suggestions over on xrv.org.uk was to add cars, so now you can keep records for as many cars and bikes as you own.

Within the app you can compare your own bikes, but soon you will be able to log on to my website and compare your bike with other riders with the same bike.

The current list of items you can monitor includes:
Insurance
MOT
Tax
Service
Oil change
Oil filter
Fuel filter
Air filter
Spark plugs
Chain
Brakes
Clutch
Electrics
Tyres
Accessories
Other

What else would you want to see included?

Also, if any of your members have any problems with their insurance, for example, I might be able to help –as I have done for several guys on XRV (this is latest: https://the-zebra.com/motorcycle-direct-says-sorry-with-300/).

I’m a financial journalist who has worked on the inside of the insurance industry, so I know all their tricks.

Maybe, but it is genuine, and not some automated spam.

I decided to do it when I realised I was riding a bike with no MOT for several months. Embarassed

I know it's for smart phones but I don't keep the same phone longer than a year, so will it save my details if I remove/reinstall the app/flash a new rom/swap phones?

I had my iPhone stolen in Barcelona and when I got the replacement the app was all uploaded again in full. I've not personally tested having the phone stolen on Android - and I wouldn't wish anyone be robbed of their phone as an experiment - but the idea is that it works the same.

Let me guess - you install this really, really useful app, register your details (including email - "just for updates, honest", and spend the rest of your life deleting spam from insewerance companies?*

*Other variations on this theme are also available, but the common denominator is having your email address sold on.

Nope, the email address is not currently used at all. It is there for when you need to confirm who you are if you want to log on to the website. Set up an email address just for this - a hotmail or Gmail address - if you like. You won't get spammed.

The app doesn't ask your real name or anything like that, though on the website, you will be able to complete as much or as little personal data as you want - but only if you want.

But I'm never giving any of it away. I'm not selling personal data to anyone.

I hope to be able to get some interesting statistics for news stories etc and to be able do market research among users - more accurate surveys than those currently done, free from the influence of advertisers etc. This is the sort of thing that will require you to use the same email address as you registered with the app, so I know that only genuine bikers are filling out the survey instead of one company signing up loads of times and loading the survey results.

In the original app I didn't include insurance policy numbers but people said it would be useful. Again - you do not have to fill that in if you like. Only do so if you want it there as a reminder in case you need to exchange details with someone.

Hello Chris, you won't get anything but pain here, popcorn is being opened even as I type and various of the oiks on here are preparing E-Poo to push through your cyber letterbox.

I know how brilliant you are with insurance company problems through personal experience as you know, so rather than people having a dig they should make a careful note of your website and store it away for the day when it all goes tits up with their insurance claim.

I quite like the idea of keeping it in one app, saves pratting about entering it in multiple apps.

I've downloaded it and will give it a try - it's free so why not Smile

(although I do agree that Whealie should really have introduced himself prior to the initial post Wink )

Search function for bike manufacturer lists bike by manufacturer should be a list of manufacturers. Model search brings up the same list. so it's the same function. Also tapping on the word Manufacturer or model causes it to 'blink' as if selected but doesn't do anything - you have to click the space beside it - not very intuitive.

Typically it looks like a hideous iPhone app when running on android. Rolling Eyes

I'll give it a try anyhow

I responded to your crash report. Are you on a contract outside the UK? In which case, as the app is designed for the UK it won't work.

I've had a lot of requests from various European countries, Canada and the US but to incorporate all the different makes and models, currencies and units - Kms, US gallons etc - would take a lot of work.

Thanks for the feedback. I will look into the issue. And yes it was designed for iPhone and copied to Android. It was built for me as a useful reminder tool. Then I thought it would be good to be able to compare how I was doing with others with the same bike.

Android is hard work because there are many different operating systems and hundreds of different handsets with different shaped screens etc - some have manual keyboards, others don't.

I'm doing my best to make it work on every model.
