Could anyone shine some light pardon the the pun but when I turn my side lights or main beam my battery is drained in ten minutes I know it's not my battery as I've checked and I have a brand new spare which does the same is it a common problem?or could someone tell me where to start or any pointers would be helpful as I don't know the bike well as I've only had it a couple of days

hi,
do you have a multi-meter? if not, buy/borrow or steal one.
if the lites are draining the battery whilst riding, then the bike is obviously not charging as it should.
once you have the multi-meter, report back Wink
cheers,
GAZ

Ok thanks gaz gonna get one tomorrow but where do I start I would guess on the battery with the engine running? I think it's defiantly wiring problem with the lights as everything worked ie indicators brake lights and electric start for a few days but the first time I used the bike at night with lights on flat battery in five minutes

It sounds like the rec/reg isn't charging the battery But a 5 minute drain is a hell of a fast one.

i think it's a charging problem ,check voltage on the battery with key on ( ~12.4 VDC) , start engine then at idle check voltage again (should be about 13 VDC) , finaly stay around 5500 rpm and check voltage (should be 14.2 VDC)
mostly bugs come from reg/rec but could be also a worn stator

As alanins says,
more than likely to be the reg/rec.
My NSR is on its third in the 4+ years I've had it (yes i know, i should give it a really good going over lol...).
But yes, they can and do blow regulator/rectifiers which in turn result in the battery not charging correctly.
It is an easy to swap, non servicable component though.
Check the battery voltage at idle and at 5,000 rpm.
If this is not the problem then to check the stator windings you can check between the yellow wire terminals in the reg/rec plug for a resistance of 0.7 resistance (Off the top of my head, well worth double checking. get yourself to nsr.co.uk and you can find a manual for the bike in the downloads section of their forum.).

Do your lights get brighter or dimmer when the engine is revved?

Best regards
