Well as some of you may know I was mean't to be picking up my new to me ZZR600 up today, and having just phoned the dealer its failed its MOT. Sad

It failed on the rear shock being warn badly or something and some kind of bearing in the swing arm?!?

And I won't be getting it for another week or two while they get a new shock for it etc.

If you were me would you still get it, I have had bad experiences with Kawasaki's before (and when I had that bike it failed its MOT before I got it too, so it feels like dejavu Confused)
Its not like I'm without a bike, I still have my GS500, which is mechanically fine and is fine, so hence why I am dubious about getting the ZZR now Confused.

I'm scared of getting it and it being a complete lemon like the ER-5 was, and me spending loads of money on it and it spending more time in the dealers than me riding it!

It is a H Reg so its not young Confused.

I'd be amazed if you could get anything on an H plate that has actually been used and didn't have problems of this kind

the ZZR is a reliable old workhorse, this one is what 14 years old, I think the rear shock must have done a sterling job to last that long and if they are replacing it with new and also the swing arm bushes/bearings then maybe it's ok

of course without looking who can say more, it depends on what you are paying for it I guess Confused

On a general "which bike is cooler" level, you know what I will say Wink
But in all honesty, at least the guys are upfront about it, and they are fixing it, maybe get someone a bit more mechanically minded to check it over for you as well, but ultimately it is up to you, if you like it, and it does go fine, go for it.

Did the dealer selling the bike do the MOT? It sounds like they were hoping that it would pass and you wouldn't find out about the rear shock until the next MOT.

TBH its something you should of noticed when you checked the bike.

No the dealer didn't do the MOT, they get someone indepedant to do it, I was told the Mechanic at the dealer had checked everything over and replaced everything that was needed , plus for £1500 I wouldn't be expecting half of these problems, I know its an older bike but at that price I wouldn't expect it.

Anyway the dealer has given me a choice whether I still want the bike or whether I don't want it. Smile

Atleast there being fair I spose.

Another option, keep your sexy, reliable GS500E for a while longer, and save up for a bigger/newer bike that won't be as likely to be a "lemon"
Just a thought.

In that case "I" wouldn't buy they. They KNEW the shock needed replacing and were just hopping it would pass.

It's hard to say really, I think G reg is getting on a bit but that doesn't mean its a nail.

I would be tempted to keep the gs500 for a touch longer and in the mean time you can save up more money and shop around for a newer bike.

I found that when I bought my old 1989 'jelly mold' CBR600 that the insurance was exactly the same for a newer 1997 model (as an example) The really new (2000 +) knock the insurance up but pre 2000 I think they are all very similar. My point being, why waste your money insuring an old one when you can get a newer one and insure for the same money. Wink

Craig - it's life's way of telling you that it's not the right bike for you!

I agree with Mike - shop around a bit longer...your GS is reliable so what's the rush?

Hmm Very good point there Mike, I might save my money up and get a newer ZZR after all I've seen R Reg's going for just under £2500. Smile

Karen, Exaclty, I believe everything happens for a reason!
And your right about my GS, as it won't and shouldn't need anything till next may when it's MOT is due, plus the little thing did suprise me yesterday how well it kept up with the other guys with me riding it not being that good of a rider. Laughing

Not sure if you should buy it or not, but I remeber years ago buying a cheap (£800) car when the missus passed her test and they offerd 100 quid off to take it now, or I could come back a week later after they had MOT's it.

We waited.
And it needed sh1t loads of work doing, sterring column had issues etc. all replaced. There were no signs of crash repair.

We only kept the car because Becce liked it and it was only gonna be for a year. But some dealers will try and sell you right dodgy things.
