my girlfriend is wanting to do her motorbike test sometime in the next few months and im slightly confused over the new rules, far more confusing than when I did it.

she is nearly 21, does she have to do the A1 section of the test ? and does she have to hold that for 2 years before she can progress to the A2 and be on a larger bike but restricted?

not sure if this makes any difference but she has a full car licence and has had a 50cc moped for almost 5 years, she did her cbt at the beginning but obviously wasn't required to resit it after passing her driving test. so would she need to resit her cbt prior to any sort of test?

if someone could clear up the route she needs to take that would be great. obviously if possible she would like to skip the 125 section of the whole thing

any help appreciated

She can skip a1 and go straight to a2 due to her age (at least 19)
After 2 years of an a2 license you can upgrade to a full A license by redoing test on bigger bike.
Or wait till age of 24 and go straight to getting an A license

as for what bike she can ride after A2, is it anything restricted down to 46 bhp ? or does it have to actually be under 46bhp ?

As long as it is restricted to 46bhp
But the bike from factory cannot be more than 94 bhp in the first place, so you cant restrict an R1 basically too powerfull
It also has to be over 175kg wet weight to comply with the New Ruling of 0.2kw/kg for an A2 license

I only know as I myself is going through the stages to get my a2 license so ive done my research Smile

Pretty much anything restricted down to 46bhp unless its originally over 70kw.

Also there is a power to weight ratio so nothing too light (most super motos are over)

The 'over 70kw' bit means its not 'pretty much anything' unfortunately. That rules out a lot of popular 600s like the Fazer, Hornet, CBR600F and Chundercat.

Aye, the new system is quite poorly imo,

When I pass my test I wont be able to drive many 600 bikes due to the bhp restriction yet I can get a Varadero 1000cc bike and restrict to make it 47bhp.

She will also have to re-do her CBT, as the car license will only validate the entitlement for 50cc, not a provisional 125cc

It's actually 35kW, which is approximately 46.94 mechanical horsepower, and various values of the many other different types of "horsepower".

Tef could probably write a few thousands wordes on it, but kilowatts are now the standard unit in the EU and the sooner we lube up and stop struggling, the less painful it will be.
