Looking for a good all round tyre for my GSR 600 it currently has the OEM Bridgestone BT014 on from new and their fine in the dry but looking for something grippy in the wet and cooler weather and perhaps the frosty mornings we will get in a few months. Work commute is 17.5 miles of motorway but also do general blasts out now and again.

Any ideas?

Pilot Road 2. Should be cheaper than the newer 3s but still an excellent all year tyre. *High mileage and very good in the wet. Like the PR3s they are dual compound.

Currently trying the Dunlop Roadsmart II. So far I'm liking them a lot and they work well in the wet. Single compound in the front but feel excellent when warmed up.

*9k is common. Search and see.

Any links to Pilot Road 2 or am I better off just going through a Tyre Fitter (B&C Bolton)
Used to have Roadsmarts on my Hyosung and really liked them, but that was a 125.

Seems the PR3's are only £10 more for the set:

Another plus 1 for the pilot roads, good all around tyres. A friend of a friend has them on his zx6r Thumbs Up

I cant comment on the life of the pr3's as ive only had them fitted for a little while but so far they are even better than the bt23s i took off.

They have better grip and feel in the wet and dry and also heat up quicker and get warmer than the bt23's.

I got them from lidsdirect on ebay for £209 delivered, plus if you go here and fill in the form you get a free £25 fuel card

Got the Pilot Road 2's Very good tyre Thumbs Up

As mentioned before duel compound, great in all conditions, last a long time. So if you can't stretch to the 3's the 2's are more then good enough.

To soft for my liking. Seem to squirm a lot.

Prefer PR2 or Avon Storms.

When you said you didn't like PR3's I was going to ask if you were the kind of person that liked Avons. Laughing

Another +1 for the Pilot Road 3.

I have a brand new set on my RR I've just bought, and I have to say they are fantastic.

I've got Avon Ultra Storm 2 on my ZZR600, bought them over the winter and while the MAXXIS that preceded them made the bike feel awful in the wet, these Avons seem a lot better connected to the ground

But.....the PR3's do move around alot. Nearly all Michelins do. The more cuts/grooves put into the tread, the more they make it move around and the sidewalls are soft.

One of the best tyres ive used IMO are still the old Avon Viper VP2 Supersports. Good enough for Knee Down in the wet on track and road and very good and stable in the dry.

But no one is gonna believe me on that. Wink

If the near vertical bike in your avatar with a gibbon hanging off of it is anything to go by, it probably says more about the length of your legs than the quality of your tyres. *trollface*

I agree.. Pilot Roads 3 are very good tyres. I had them before. They last long, grippy in wet.

Only because I don't ride in Winter I fitted Pilot Power 3 last time (done 5k miles and they are still good).

If I was going to commute all year round I would go for PR3s instead.

I use these on The Deauville as they are cheap and last for ages.

There are no truly bad tyres anymore and virtually all tyres are better then the rider controlling the bike that they are fitted to.
I do wish people would get over this obsession they have with tyres and just learn to adjust their riding to the tyres and machines they ride.

The edges (the extra-sticky compound bit) on the BT023s on my VFR are almost tacky to my fingers, and at least 60 degrees after a ride. Not running lower than stock pressures either.

I will put PR3s on when the BT023's run out, and see how they compare. Only about 1.5mm to wear bar now on the rear, after ~4k miles. I estimate changing at 5k.

Only times I've had slips on BT023s are manhole covers in the wet (but I dial it right back all over in the wet), and the odd slip under power when pushing it cornering in the dry. Totally controllable though.

Why would buy a PR1? That would be like going out and buying a playstation 1 instead of a PS2/3. Well the pilot road 1 is probably ok but not quite as durable or grippy as its newer versions. Only 1 way to find out tho.

Budget is the biggest reason. A pair of Road 1s are £148.49 (including delivery) for my ZZR600 while the PR2s are £199.

People (including myself) still buy old consoles but when they do so they aren't expecting PS3 performance from it.

It's the same for the people who are buying PR1s. They know they are good single compound tyres that are reasonably priced and don't have as good wet grip, durability as is seen in the PR2 and PR3 but they're great for commuting.

I've ridden PR1s for 4 years and PR2s for a couple of years. Ive got the PR2s on my 9R and PR1s on my ZZR 600. They are different bikes for different purposes. This can be said about the tyres too.

Would it be okay to go up from the 120/65/17 OEM size tire on the front to 120/70/17? PR3s don't seem to come in the 65 size for my 2002 zx6r.

I'm not a really fast/skilled rider any more so I am not sure if I would even notice any handling differences, but I wouldn't want it putting the speedo out etc.
