As well as bikes I'm a bit of a gadget freak.

My latest 'toy' is a robotic vacuum cleaner, a Roomba Elite.

Only had it for a few days but it does seem to do a good job other than:

it has a very small dust collector bin, which needs emptying after every room (although maybe I just have a lot of dust...)

it is quite lazy, only being able to run for 60 - 90 minutes on one charge before needing to recharge for a whole 12 hours.

Anyway, what are others favourite gadgets?

A robotic vacum cleaner Laughing I want one!

I like my gadgets, but i don't think im playing in the same league as you gabber. Latest gadget i 'made' myself. Got a spare head set and soldered it to one of them tapes that come with car CD players.

So i can now play my MP3's off my 6230 through the car speakers. Might work as a car phone, not tried yet.

Next job, figuring out some why to wire it into the CD player in the other car... Thinking

It looks so cool and its more than just an MP3 player, I can take it out with me when I need to take lots of photos and store them all on it
and I can use it as a portable hard drive aswell.

My latest 'gadget' is a new Dell Optiplex PC, with a wireless network connected to it for all the other PC's in the house. Before that it was a Palm Tungsten T3. My father is worse than me, he just bought a laser measuring tool. When I asked why he said he just had to have it! Rolling Eyes

I don't ever remember personalising things.

BUT, at least a robotic vacuum cleaner does something. What does a personalised plate do?

I have a radar detector for my bike, which I'd never really got to use and now it's going to be sitting making a good thing to have sitting on my shelf as it's going to be a while until I'm able to be in need of it. I also have a little gadget thing which when you press a button it spins your plate around Laughing which also is not going to be getting any use for a while. Sad

Both quite cool, and neither are "in your face" the same way some stuff is.

Do radar detectors actually work? By that I mean are they practical in avoiding speed traps?

Not that I would ever need one officer... Shifty

Not one of mine, but a friend from college who rides had a transparent LCD screen covering his plate, which was wired to his speedo, so when he hit 90mph.. it triggered and the LCD screen switched on, as it wasnt coded all it did was send the crystals black, essentially blacking out his plate.. when he slowed down it went off again... As it was thin, and also had a rubber rim around it, it was really hard to see unless it was on of course Smile

The one which I bought is called the Bel996 and it is intended and designed to be put on a bike. I did lots of research on the thing before parting with my money and everything I was able to find about it said it was good.

You can read a review of it here. The website which the review is on, Uk Speedtraps is a very good place for finding information out about stuff like this, and lots of interesting reading on there.

The only problem in my view with having a LCD screen over your plate is fair enough it comes on at over 90mph, but that can be the general traffic speed on a motorway, and you don't get pulled over normally, but if your plate is a black blob then you would do. I'd prefer something like that if you have the choice of it being on or off as opposed to it just changing once you go over a certain speed as the penalty for going 91mph wouldn't be that bad, but riding with a blocked out plate with a gadget like that is perverting the course of justice as well as the speeding charge and probably they'd do you for everything in the world they can do they any other minor stuff with your bike like exhausts, tax, MOT, tyres or anything else at all they can as stuff like that would annoy them.
