I'm not sure solar is the way to go on a boat. I have this ingenious idea for a wind powered propulsion device though...

So, about 20kW sustained over a day, i.e. a pretty weedy 250cc engine? If they're really averaging 5+ knots out of that, then fair play to the designers.

I imagine they'd be absolutely shafted in any serious or prolonged storm though.

You mean stick a wind turbine on it,and use that to power an electrical motor? Wink

No, no, no... the turbine would power a heating unit which would be used to generate steam the steam could then be used to drive paddles on either side of the boat.

And then, because it could move by itself it would generate its own wind, which would of course give it free energy / perpetual motion. Now that's the tech the government's been hiding from us all these years! Making us invest in solar when they know damn well there's free energy out there.

Anything less than 10 knots and you're as well sticking a mast on it and sailing!

they say its about 1/3 quicker than a sail boat
though I'm sure racing boats go a lot quicker (sail ones that is)

Sod Atlantic storms in that.

As said, why bother. It's cheaper and easier to fit sails. That would only beat a sail boat in a calm sea. Anything over about force 5 a sail boat would piss all over it.

It's not a particularly good comparison though - this thing is 115 feet long! A 115 foot sailing yacht would cross the atlantic at 20 knots +

It also said it cruises at 5 knots - even a 40 foot sailer would cruise at that or a little bit more.

It weighs 9 tons, 8.5 tons of which is batteries - wait till they need changing as performance drops off.
It's an impractical stunt and could never be used for a commercial vessel.
