Hello, today I got to this article on my favourite czech motorcycle web, so I thought I'd share with you some of the wisdom that stands behind those 58 ponies.

They used Garrett GT12 Turbo, that gave it 40bhp, then they tuned the DFi, added Yoshimura exhaust system, K&N filter and that resulted in 58bhp. They also say they put on it better tires and brakes.

Looks like a neat little install to me!
I wonder why they used a single throttle body and not the OEM twin throttle bodies after the Plennum? Maybe they are using bigger injectors that don't fit the OE throttle bodies?

58bhp for a 250cc twin seems like a decent result for a low boost set up on 100% std engine internals.

I'm sure that in Indonesia they do this kind of thing quite a bit as bikes over 250cc are subject to some horrific import tax or something?

I've also seen a Yamaha WR250X turbocharged to about 50bhp as well on youtube. Also I bet it's easier to ride a 60bhp turbocharged 250cc 4stroke quickly than it is to ride a 60bhp 250cc 2stroke, in terms of effort and commitment required.

The KR1-S made that stock over 20 years ago, probably more fuel efficient too.

Because they can and why not?

I would love to have that in my garage, as a sunny day special.

I do agree, but I think it's not the same to get a motorcycle right out of the box and ''modify'' something. ZXR250 did about 45bhp back then.

About the performance, as I remember, when 250cc two strokes raced back then they were racing against 400cc four strokes. That kind of answers the ,,KR1-S made that stock over 20 years ago'' question.

EDIT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNRJRVgxtMU - Oulton Park, RGV 250 vs. VFR400, great footage Thumbs Up

My point is there is no point,

They have made a 250 that is heavier, slower, more expensive and less reliable than a bike made 20 years ago.

It's 200% import tax on vehicles you bring in the country! You need to be a member of the IMI, effectively Indonesia's equivalent of the BMF and have authorisation to entitle you to legitimately import "big" bikes.

No surprise that the Ninja 250 is a big seller because it's the biggest affordable bike that's on sale. I think that the Versys 650 and the ER-6 were recently released there last year. But to be honest, you seldom get anything over 250.

The only place where you can use anything over 10 bhp is on the Jakarta toll roads, which funnily enough, motorcycles are not permitted to use!

Oh, in Indonesia, FAST would be defined as 60mph lol!

What would be significantly less funny about turbocharging a ZX10R then?

I consider turbocharging my Bandit to be utterly pointless. I still did it because Middle Finger Middle Finger society.

I wonder if you could tune this to exactly 47bhp? I'd dismissed the Ninja 250 as not powerful enough for my A2 license...

Why?
Have you ever done anything like this? do you have the ability to do something like this?.
I bet you think the Honda 250 six cylinder bike of the sixties is shit as well ?

If it was`nt for peoples innovation , we would never make any progress or learn about engine capabilities and we`d all still be chugging around on single cylinder thumpers !

I take my hat off to them and say "well done"

You don't see something like this every day? Thinking
I think of it like an excercise of mind and abilities, like when people program on their computers just because they can and it brings them joy. Or art, lot of stupid paintings, buildings, statues and so on out there, the only difference between art and the ninja 250 with turbo is, that one is fun for wide variety of people and the other is considered stupid and over priced dust magnet. Yes, I'm talking about art, the art where ''normal'' people look at it and say: ,,it's just a bunch of dots on plain paper'' and other's say: ,,briliant, master piece''.

I dont think that it was just a bolt on exercise?, do you?
Dont you think that those involved had to find ways round the difficulties of putting a small turbo on a small bike?

You`re right , it may not be cutting edge and world changing , but It`s still something a bit leftfield.
Maybe ? just maybe? one of those involved might of learnt something that will lead to greater things and a whole new way of engine induction for smaller engines in the future?

Maybe If they had of used a 10,000cc engine, everybody would be saying "ooo! how fantastic! brilliant!"

Hey ho ! each to their own.

More revs you say, I personally would like to see that. It's not that easy as just putting in a turbo, is it? Thinking

Well it's not the same thing, is it? Pistons and valves, rods and some other bits in the 250 ninja are twice as much bigger than in that CBR. I think the ninja 250 engine could maybe handle 20k rpm, but not for long I say. Thumbs Up

That's what's so complicated about adding revs, you've got to make all parts light and strong enough and I doubt that the cheapest kawasaki on the market is made that well.

The CBR had gear driven cams. Belts or chains are a liability at that RPM. The CBR used to burn valves, aside from that they were like a ticking clock, very reliable. Not uncommon to see them with 150-200k KM on them in their domestic market.
