Not at all. I bought my first bike (bandit 400) before I did my test, it gave me the kick up the arse to do it! Also it was cheap and would have been silly not to buy it.

I bought my first bike before my test, having it sitting in the garden gave me more incentive to pass. Laughing

How old are you? Are you buying new or used?

It don't really matter if you get before or after as long as you have someone come along who can test ride it/ check it over properly. However if you can ride 55bhp or above that after you pass I wouldn't get one of the bikes you selected.

If you want to get used to the weight of a bike and the feel then get a 125 first for a few months then when you feel ready get a 500/600cc. The bikes you suggested are prettt shit and over priced. Also chav magnets.

However the DAS or training you are doing should be enough to get you ready for a bigger bike. If you can pass the tests then you should be able to handle a 600. Thumbs Up

CBF or YBR to start with.

Ninja 300 or CB500 after. Gives you that little extra power when you might want it rather than straining on a 250.

The CBR150 was never released here so you are unlikely to be able to insure it

I wouldn't bother with the restricted route as it's a pain in the arse once you are confident in your riding ability. If you feel you need a smaller bike first then do your cbt and get a 125 or pass doing DAS and get a 125. You can get 125's capable of 80mph which isn't much less than the ninja 250's 95mph.

Personally I would do the DAS first as you get to use their 'big bikes' and see if you feel you can handle one. My mates 5'6 and can put both feet down on the hornet 600 and ducati monster so could be bikes to consider. Go to a dealer and sit on a few, only way to tell really.

Just please don't get a 250 ninja or cbr 150 Mr. Green

Neither of them and here's why.

The licensing laws changed earlier this year. To get a license to ride anything bigger than a 125, you now have to sit your tests on a 395cc+ bike (A2) or 595cc+ (A).

In practice, this means that the smallest bike you'll use for training and test is an ancient GS500, or a new 200kg+ NC700 (or brand new CB500) if for some reason you decide to go A2. But why would you? There are relatively few bikes that are actually suitable for the 35kW A2 license, and you'll have constant hassles with restrictors, and arguing the semantics of "full" licenses with ignorant insurers.

For exactly the same price and effort you can get an A license, the only difference is that you'll get it on an ER6 or similar which isn't any bigger than an NC700.

So after doing that and getting used to the bigger bike, would you take a giant step back down to a revvy 250, or a silly import 150 that's barely more powerful than the 125 and which you'll have real problems selling on?

Your real issue is going to be finding a training school with a suitable "big" bike that you can use to get yourself a license. I'd focus on that hurdle first. Your height isn't as relevant as your inside leg, and you can't tell what a bike is going to be like based on quoted seat heights, you need to get a leg over.

Licensing is a bit of a grind these days, but it's worth it in the end and you'll get access to a vast range of bikes almost any of which would be a better choice than those two.

tl;dr version -

You're mad to get either of those.

No...youre not mad to get either of those.

If they are the types of bike you want now then go for it. If you get bored or want a bigger bike after 6 months then simply sell it and get the bike you want at that point...and so on.

Just cos you get a bike now doesnt mean you're stuck with it forever...a lot of people forget that somehow.

Biking is a learning experience and half the fun is trying different bikes, learning the ropes and working your way up as and when youre ready.

Listening to advice is one thing, but dont let others tell you what bike to buy.

Down. Working your way down from an NC700 / ER6 to a 250.

Please note that I "worked my way up", and I fully agree with you that this is the right way to do it.

But you can't do it any more, so it's pointless and - with respect - confusing and unhelpful to advocate it.

Get a 125 if you want, have larks on that, but when you want to move up, pass your tests, then think about what bike you want to own.

Eh? Neither was the NSR250/CBR400/GSXR400 etc etc yet people don't have issues insuring them.

But they are listed on insurance sites. The CBR150 is for dem Thais. Japs seem to be alright to insure and they offer you a decent list of those models.

It won't be readily available on quote comparison sites, but I can't see why you couldn't insure a CBR150 if you did a ring round and told them it was a non-UK model.

I still wouldn't bother with the CBR. You're not getting that much more power than the 125 (17bhp, 82mph max speed), and selling it in the future will be a pain since 125 learners, who are your main buying market for a bike of that size, won't be able to ride it.

Agree entirely with this post.

The mention of the ER6 actually is very relevant - a mate of mine's Mrs. had to get here SV lowered to feel confident about putting her feet down and she's now moved on to a stock ER6N, at a guess she's probably about your height. They seem to be fairly nice little bikes really and cracking value for money, especially compared to the chav magnets you mentioned - the little CBR and Ninja are both over-priced for what they are in reality.

Also, you could treat yourself to a brand new bike - Kawi dealers have the 0% for 36 months on a £60 deposit at the moment!

The thing is..the ERF6F is about £6000 Brand New..the CBR is £3500 Brand new. If someone just wants a brand new bike, they may not be able to stretch to 6k.

Next year I may take on a new ERF6 if they still have the 0% deal AND I can knock a chunk off the asking price.

They go used for quite nice money though - the 'new bike' thing was just that there's a good finance deal on. There's also a load of "last years model" (which I think the only difference is colour?) unregistered so would be 13 plate anyway, for sub £5k at a fair few dealers. Don't know if they'd be eligible for £60 deposit 0% or not though.
