I admit I don't know much about it, I just watched a C4 documentary about their 'war' yesterday.

Seems to me that the graffiti art scene is a niche of male egos who want everyone to follow their rules of tagging ('dogs pissing on lampposts' springs to mind), they got butthurt that Banksy did it his own way and gained public fame for doing work that was actually enjoyed by the average Joe.

Robbo, on the other hand, was just a bog-standard graffiti artist who got famous through tagging his name in huge letters on London Underground trains in the 80s - quite brave and poignant, but who the hell cares about seeing someone's name in bright colours on the outside of a train?

My opinion - Banksy is a better artist. Robbo just happens to be the alpha male on the rather mundane 'graffiti tagging' scene.

Thoughts?

Wouldn't say Banksy is the better artist, as they have completely different styles and besides, art is what you make of it and so on.

Banksy started out as your typical bubble-writting wildstyle 'graffer' too, only he turned to stencils because he needed to get his stuff up quickly and avoid prosecution.
They've since buried the hatchet anyways. Banksy put up a tribute to Robbo while he was in a coma.
'Through the Gift Shop' says a little more about it, i think. Also look up 'Wall and Piece'.

It's criminal damage and kills kittens.

Also, as I live in Bristol, I know Banksy. Well, my friend's, father-in-law's brother's mate went to school with someone who knew him. At least, that's what you'll hear from some Bristolians!!1

Where's the option for Vandalistic Selfish Arsehole/s?

All graffiti is shite. No matter wot some folk think.

For sure there is real talent among the shite scrawled on public/private places but most of what is on show is moronic mindless mess.
If you wish to 'display' your 'art' do it on property you have permission to use and where it doesn't insult the sensitivities of others.

I am pro-art but not at the expense of others feelings.

What 'I' like must not be forced on others. Live and Let Live is not license to behave as you will.

Hmm never really heard of the kind robbo, but after doing a bit of googling his art isn't that bad. Got to say I like graphiti art brightens up dull cities/areas if it has been done right.

Personally though I'm not much for the "normal" kind of art, it's boring and has no soul.

Sorry but looks really boring IMO.

It's a good painting but nothing more than that never seen what made it so special. There are better works on ebay in the self represented section.

Oh.. You are the sort who, 'needs it a' spelt oot fur ye'. You perhaps miss the complete mystery in that picture. Smile

You don't simply look at the outline and colour. Look behind the image man.

I consider myself auld fashioned. I do not appreciate most abstract and consider most of it simply an illustration of madness rather than artistic skill. Perhaps that is also lazy. Smile

I saw a billboard today that informed me that you're wrong, also too fat, wearing stupid clothes and driving the wrong car.

Nah, I'm only joking, it was more like fifty billboards.

I had never heard of him so done a google check and that is most of what his does. Also anyone who thinks of himself as a 'King' has a huge ego and is a bit of a knob.

Banksy at least tells a story and makes you think about his work.

Nope not at all I can look behind the outside and look at the inner beauty/meaning of paintings plus other things. Like personally I'd rate Ls Lowry's Fever Van higher than Leonardo Da Vinci's Mona Lisa.

It's more interesting and has more character.

But as you say "we could critique art till the coos come in" but instead of looking at prints of famous art pieces just look at ebay for example at the self represented art.

Obligatory link to the Banksy Vs Robbo tag war of 1985 - present.

(Voted Banksy because his ideas are more original)

Original? Seriously?

Even he admitted he was pretty much copying Blek:

You can tell which posters haven't watched the documentary, which I have to say was a great watch.

I'm seriously crap at art in the real sense, i.e using free hand to draw something. Stenciling is well, piss easy, so I can very much see Robbo's point.

You've still go to be able to draw whatever you want onto the stencil material before you cut it out. So he's still capable of art.

He certainly looks to be a plagiarist tho, but he's seriously good at marketing the Banksy name.

edit: Shout out to this dude

It may not be political or social comment or regarded as high art but some of it decorates a subway near Debdale Park. Better than the usual weed/M18/illiterate scrawl.

Art's a pretty personal thing (see my next remark re the Vermeer)

I have to admit to not knowing about the "war", and not even knowing who King Robbo is (probably I should!) ... so I can't comment, but it sounds like egos at dawn, which is when the humour goes, and the commercial value kicks in.

I follow a couple of "Urban Art" like pages on FB. Occasionally you see a piece of witty tagging which you have to admire, I don't like it when I see wholesale cluttered graffiti, but then, where does a budding street artist practice?

But then again, having lived in cities my whole life, I hate ugly urban space even worse, and *some* graffiti snazzes up what is an otherwise shitty environment for people to live in.

Especially now that I live in extremely drab East London, I also like the concept of pothole gardening Cool ... might have to contemplate taking that up around these parts Laughing

I can't say I like the girl with the pearl earring, it just seems too corny for me ... more likely a product of my upbringing where everybody had those awful Woolworths girls on their wall Laughing rather than a valid critique.

I find more interest in the Lowry, but its something I'd probably hang in a downstairs loo so I had something to look at. I like "busy" pictures so that when I am just sitting somewhere monging, I can pick out all the different things going on.

But but but The girl With the Pearl Necklace is from a Dutch Master. Smile

I always feel that Lowry looks like the painting kids did at primary. Sorry... Sad

The thing about the Vermeer is the simplicity and beauty in and of the subject.
And as the Mona Lisa, no fucker knows who the fcuk she is/was.

Although Lowry's use of colour to illustrate 'ordinary' life is very artistic too.
I bought a houseful of original African art (paintings and sculpture) when I was in W. Africa. I bought it because I thought it looked nice.

Possible different/fresh as his is more modernist.
But like 'good' auld music and musicians they will never lose their value if you understand what it means.
