Hi there. I'll try and make this simple.
A couple of months ago I bought my Honda XR. It rode great when I bought it, no problems. Then after a couple of weeks it was taking longer to get started in the morning, it took longer and longer, and then I noticed while riding that it would stall when trying to pull away in first.

A couple more weeks down the line and it wont start. I know next to zero about bikes so any help would be appreciated!

Andy.

Sounds like your battery slowly dying if it's been finding it harder to get the bike going.

Battery death can be the battery actually dying or the bike not charging it properly (charging issue)

I originally thought that, but all the lights come on fine, and along with the issues with pulling away from anywhere in first it just didnt seem battery related.

Also, when I try and start it, it sounds identical to how it did when it was working, just doesnt fire up.

The battery lost its charge when I first bought it (my fault) and it sounded much different

ok, that's my theory ruled out then.

how long since it was last serviced?

Spark plugs are clean with correct gaps?

Does it attempt to fire when starting or just churn over on the starter?

It was last serviced around 800 miles ago. I would have no issue taking it to a garage but it doesnt start.

I've been told to check/change spark plugs and that is my next port of call. Although I must admit I have no idea where they are or how to check them!

I think its just churning on the starter. Every now and again it starts for all of two seconds but other than that it just turns over without starting.

if it's attempting to start, a kind of coughing sound then there's an attempt at spark.

Not meaning to insult your intelegence, but there is fuel in?

The bike needs things to run,

Fuel, the right amount, too little and it'll struggle, too much and it'll struggle

My bike will sit spinning on the starter if I don't have the choke on enough, or if I have too much on.

electric for the spark and any engine management etc.

I'm afraid I'm out of ideas

Aha dont worry about insulting me, like I say I have no idea. When it was happening I knew I was low on fuel. I put some in just before I stopped riding it. Maybe it would pay for me to put more in now?

if you've got enough to slosh about in there you've enough to start it.

I've started my ZZR on just the fuel in the hose between tank and engine!

Check your fuel tap isn't turned to off,

putting some fuel in could cause any gunk in the tank to float away from the hose.

might be worth having a look at https://www.dansmc.com/troubleshooting2.htm incase anything there helps
