The old man picked up an FZ1 back in August last year. So fortunately I've been able to ride it a fair old bit.

This is the 2007 model, and it's not a bad looking brute. Somewhat questionable FZ1 decals on the tank. However even if you're not a bad fan of the way it looks, there are heaps of after market parks makers. The above bike for instance now has a seat cover, new mirrors, CRG levers, tail tidy, and aero bungs. All pretty mild stuff.

In terms of how it rides, the motor is lifts out of the 04-06 R1. Of course it's had most of the R1-ness removed with a different exhaust, pistons, cams, and head losing top end rush. It's still a powerful unit, and in this form will just keep on going and going as it's pretty under stressed. There's loads of wide range and it can move at a fair old lick. The fuelling is super smooth. The 2006 version was renowned for being super snatchy when you got back on the throttle. The 2007 is just right.

In terms of handling, it suffers from a little front end vagueness that most bikes of this type tend to. It also like to flat the bars a bit if you're pressing on. It doesn't get too carried away, but if that bothers you, slap a steering damper on it. Brakes also from the R1, but the 2001-2003 model's conventionally mounted version this time. They are dependable units and give great feel. Makes you wonder if radial really is streets ahead?

The instruments are good and clear, and there a few faults with it to be honest. It doesn't inspire that many superlatives, it is an embodiment of that UJM thing. In terms of things that go wrong. Check the EXUP valve works, check the headlight lens for stress cracks on the naked version. And signs of crash damage. The naked version tends to be owned by your older, more respectable kind of rider, or one of the modifying brigade. At least it'll be easy to tell which person owned your bike last. The semi faired version tends to get bought by bigger mileage touring or commuting types.

It's a good bike, a little uninspiring, yes the engine is great, but the whole package could be so much more.

Have always liked these, exhausts are painfully hideous though. Laughing

Hideous, and a pig to change because the EXUP valve is built into the pipe from the can. Change the cane and ditch the valve is hassle, and then it'd need a re-map. Weirdly it doesn't actually sound too bad on the stock can. Thumbs Up

Replace the standard can (you won't lose anything by ditching the EXUP), gut the CAT and get the FCE (Fuel-Cut Eliminator). Add a PC, Ivan's Reflash, air box mod, trimmed secondary flies - a few options, and learn a lot more about it here:

https://www.ivansperformanceproducts.com/2006fz1.htm (USA)

FZ1 gen 2 is not my area of experience, but Ivan (USA) knows his stuff, UK distributor:

https://www.sgmotorsport.co.uk/

You can get a lot of help here:

https://www.yamahafz1oa.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=10 (USA)

And here:

https://www.foc-u.co.uk/

150rwhp is easily achievable

Thumbs Up
