Having trouble getting the piston in the cylinder, youtube shows me ring compressors for bigger pistons, is that my best bet or is there a secret technique?

Also should the arrow be facing the exhaust right?
And which way do the rings go when you put it into the cylinder or doesnt it matter?

Is a little crappy chinese minimoto i've got laying around
Something to do, got the week off work Very Happy

Small piston rings can be squeezed into the slots using your fingers and you should be able to wiggle it into the cylinder.

Arrows face the exhaust yes.

The piston may have notches so the rings can only go a certain position or they may be free floating.

Can also try a coke can and jubilee clip if your fingers don't do it.

Make sure you set the ring end gaps before you try to fit them and make sure you space the gaps when you fit the rings to the pistons. Thumbs Up

50cc rings are so small and brittle you have to be careful. Once they are on the piston, you should be able to squish them as you insert it into the cylinder. The entrance to the cylinder usually has a very slight champfer to make it easier.

When was the last tim you had to do this with modern engine parts?

In fact a step further I don't know of a single supplier of a tool to gap rings in the UK.

The tools I always used were a feeler gauge set and the bore itself. I haven't fitted a set of rings for yonks though so maybe they don't need gapping any more although IIRC my Hornet manual mentions them, the Zephyr manual definitely does and I'm fairly sure the Monster manual does too. I'd still check them for peace of mind anyway.

Feeler gauges and a EZE-LAP to set the ring gap.

cable tie around the piston to hold the rings tight, if it is 2stroke then they usually have to be the correct way up too as they seat around the pin that stops them turning and getting mashed by the ports, keep some cutters handy so once the rings are in the barrel you can cut the cable tie off em.

Wahay, got it in.
Had to get some new rings off ebay but got them on without fucking them and without taking the piston back off as gudgeon clips are pains in the arse and love pinging off around my bedroom!

All back together now minus the tank, will be very surprised if this works mind
I don't get how you're meant to bed the pistons in on a pull start engine without wearing them, will just go for it once i've got some fuel...have put a thimble of 2stroke oil around the cylinder and piston before installing to make sure it's nice and lubed

Think I put the piston on backwards thinking the exhause went underneath so i've put the cylinder head on backwards to match the piston Laughing

Just remove and refit correctly. Far less hassle in the long run
