I have a crack in my windscreen, and obviously want it fixing although it is not bothering me and I have 11 months left on my MOT. I used to have windscreen insurance but I no longer think I do but my FC policy says that I have a £60 excess to pay if I claim on the policy. If I do claim of my motor insurance I take it I will get raped over the next few years?

I had a massive stone crack my windscreen - paid the insurers' excess (£70 iirc) for a brand new one.

Non-disclosable as far as they are concerned and it hasn't affected my renewal at all!

Like you I was very wary of nothing being "free", however I called a few places for a replacement and they were all quoting £250+

So either they load it on the people who don't claim, or make it at cost + a bit.

I've had two windscreens replaced on insurance in the manner you've described,

£75 excess but worth it in my opinion, think insurance companies throw it in there as a deal sweetener tbh as I didn't notice much difference in renewal, perhaps my no claims bonus cancelled it out as I got a reduction each year.

Yea, £60 is worth it when you consider the price of some modern windscreens, the claim gets logged by the insurance company but doesn't affect renewal price unless you have 3 in one year, that's what Admiral told me last renewal, when I was shocked they told me I had 5 claims. Laughing

Never declared the screens I have had replaced.

I did notice 1 comparison site does list a windscreen repair under claims, I ignored it as my insurance company said no need to declare.

best to check prior to claiming.

I just go direct, i expect a freelander will cost more but bristol Windscreens will fit a new (oe) screen for £80 to a combo van.

Auto windscreens quote £360 for the same screen so either are stitching up your insurance company for a huge sum or they are all in it together and the excess you pay is actually not an excess at all but the total cost of the job.

I guessed that as it was an insurance company they would be on the fiddle.

The ex had the screen replaced in her freelander for £105 from a place in Bristol, on her insurance it wiped out a years no claims if she claimed for a screen. As she only had 2 years no claims it was worth paying for.

Edit:- I just found the receipt, It was Bristol windscreens.

Thanks mate, insurance are scumbags. I will wait until my renewal and just ask if I still have specific glass insurance if not I will get it ( I do need to change some details like my breakdown assistance, I do not trust their pikey company and have full AA). As it is I have a MOT and I have glued the crack and it is not creeping so I have time on my side.

It's not that hard to do yourself if you have a mate to help lift the screen into place.

I did mine on the cunto for under £50 for the screen and the bonding kit.

Bonding kit

autoglass are ridiculous cunts for overcharging Rolling Eyes

I rang for a quote on replacing drivers window on my 06 mx5. £340!

rang the next day wondering if they'd misheard me and thought I wanted the all house windows replaced or something, the woman said they obviously hadn't applied " the discount" (never found out what that was for) .....of £10 Laughing

in the end I got the main dealer to do it all in for £130 Rolling Eyes
