Definately this. I have been known to skimp and bodge many things, but there are only 2 places I can think of where I wouldn't.

Brakes and Chain.

Get chain and sprockets online. I got a DID set for 80 or 90 quid last year. I have heard of people charging 200 quid or something but that's ridiculous.

A cheap chain isn't cheap if it lets go and holes your cases.

^^^^^^This^^^^^^

I fitted a cheap chain yonks ago, it let go and tore a nice hole in my engine casing and also bent the gearbox output shaft and took out the clutch release mech to boot, i have learnt from my mistake and hopefully i can stop someone else making it too! Laughing

Is it really worth skimping on a chain?

So you'd skimp on tyres?

They are a big company and do industrial chain and other components so may be fine. I'm fitting one to my old bonneville now so will let you know how I get on

just to add a slightly different spin on this - I work with fairly large cranes amongst other stuff, and for the suspended cab, we use Reynolds chain, as the tsubaki stuff we have used in the past was shit, and we had a fair few failures within a 1/4 of the life of the Reynolds stuff. mind you, it was about 1/4 of the price too.

just goes to show that a supposed 'good' brand can also be crap in other applications......

I do as I normally order single compound older models such as the pilot road 1 and do the fitting and balancing myself.

I know their capabilities and ride accordingly.

Ive had the chain in stock for years which is why I used it, its well packed and the company that makes it meets international quality standards.

Ive quite a lot of bikes ranging from 1950s to modern stuff and Ive rebuilt most of them . I have a workshop and make many parts myself, and do my own fabrication awelding and painting. I also ride a lot, home and abroad and have competed in enduro and sprinting.

So I am an idiot? , lets hear a little about your qualifying experience with motorcycles.

I wouldn't have accused you of idiocy so much as poor obs. The thread was comfortably dead for nearly three years, after all; at least, it was until you decided to chip in.

Also a Bonne isn't exactly stressing a chain.
