Got myself a pizza delivery job Very Happy started today and done 5 hours at £5 a hour. Can use their new helmet, new gloves and new jacket but used my own gloves and jacket (will use theirs tomorrow). Scooters are decent too, 2013 yamaha vity 125 scooters. Had 0 miles this morning till i shown up Twisted Evil . Couldn't wish for a better job to be honest, the free pizza is nice too Laughing

Anyone done this job before, any advice?

Ordered a mount and charger for iphone as they allow us to use our phones as sat navs and charge them in store. Can use their mount but its just a zip up plastic thing.. Lets water in too. Think this will be safe? Carrying a £200 phone and riding a brand new bike seems dodgy. The area is decent but it's drunk mainly students i'll be delivering to (by the town and universtity/ cheap shops).

Also the bike must be restricted unless they do a 50cc version. Is it worth me getting it de restricted on the down low? as it won't go past 40 at the mo.

Cheers. Oh and anyone consdering delivering pizza for papa johns..

Do it!
Free petrol, new bike, new gear and free pizza.. Decent hours too Thumbs Up

Ktm 300 here I come Laughing

advice I got when applying -

Use their gear, it's going to get worn quickly and out in all weathers,
carry a good torch for finding house numbers while going along
get an A-Z of the area and memorise routes to main areas.

I'd be careful of using your phone as a sat nav, phones don't like getting wet.

Instead of mounting the phone on the bike, why not plug in some headphones and listen to the directions whilst it sits snug in your shirt pocket.

I'm pretty sure the Google maps on the iPhone do turn-by-turn instructions and that Android will have an equivalent.

Cheers lads Thumbs Up

Do usually use headphones but sometimes it tells me to turn when it's too late and i miss the turning. Also when i arrive it says 'you've arrived at your destination' when really the house is the other end of the road.. Could always check after I arrive though.

Going to get a torch in the morning as shift starts at 7pm so will be out till late.

Not sure about A-Z as the bikes only deliver local and i live close anyway so know the area well. Sat nav is just for back roads really, never have a problem finding my way back. May get one anyway just incase.

What do you reckon about de restricting bike if it's for my use only?

I doubt they'll derestrict the bike for you.

Although I haven't got a clue why they would restrict a 125cc scooter...

Sounds like a bad idea to me. That's asking for the bike to die and you being implicated as the cause of it . I don't even know if I'd want to be the only person using a single bike because there is no doubt who has been using it. I'd personally mix it up a bit and use all the different bikes if I could.

I'd follow the rules of "if it's not your bike then don't fuck with it".

1st off, ditch the phone and buy a local area A-Z map. Trust me. Most shops i've worked in have a big map stuck to a wall that the computer gives you a grid reference for, so you can plot a route while the order is being made up. (Papa Johns have google maps built in to the system as well if you select the order and press M) After a while you'll be able to do it by memory, but an A-Z is golden when you're lost and don't have 3G/battery. Bring a torch too since there's always a few houses in every area with unlit numbers & no street lights.

2nd, always check for upsells. Nothing sucks more than having to do the same delivery twice because you forgot the 2litre bottle of coke & extra garlic dip.

3rd, if you get given multiple drops, put the nearer one in the top of the box and the further one in the bottom, the heat from the top keeps the bottom bag warmer for longer.

4th, if you do screw up an order, blame the shop. "Oh, the shop guys must have given me the wrong bag! It's all their fault, honest, I just deliver what they give me!"

Finally, pizza bikes are a hoot to ride but don't get carried away- Although you can get away with blasting speed cameras if the shop you work at doesn't keep logs of who's riding which bike, if an officer spots you speeding in person you're screwed. (I learned this one the hard way Embarassed)

-oh, and if you select an order in the system that isn't ready yet, then go Make/Cut > Skip Make (F2) > Make/Cut > Skip Oven (F3), you can book it out in your name before it's ready to be delivered. I used to do this to bag orders from people I knew so I could chat/doss/have a sneaky fag when I dropped off their order.

I estimate a Vity is about 8hp and good for 55mph on the flat. But it has 10 inch wheels, meaning it can't take bumps worth a damn.

Likely it's restricted to reduce the risk of pizzas getting demolished from the ride.

Hah I wish I had a job like that when I was 17. Alas there were no phones with built in sat nav back then so not sure how I would have fared. Sadly I ended up in a card shop at the time. Not so good.

Papa Johns are good pizzas, better than Dominos. That's all I have to add, good luck and enjoy!

I ran a 'branded' pizza shop (not an independent, one of the big chains) for a few years and will stick my oar in here.

1. Don't fuck with the bike.

2. Don't bother with the nav, buy an A-Z because you will learn 70% of the streets within the first 6weeks anyway. You'll be going to the same places most of the time.

3. Equipment. Don't compromise. Don't wear it just because it's theirs. If it doesn't fit, is sub-standard, feels a bit flimsy etc etc just wear your own. As an employee you have just as much responsibility to protect yourself as they do towards you. Which brings me onto my next point......

4. BE CAREFUL. In the five years I was in the trade I knew three riders quite well who got badly hurt (not working for me at the time). One now has a false leg, one no longer has aspirations of becoming a model and the other sadly is no longer with us. Don't let them push you telling you that you need too be faster all the time. More than 50% of the time is lost in store. If they're not doing their but then you can't either.

Good luck though. Overall I had a great time whilst pizza-ing but in the end it just wasn't for me.
