Looking to get my Hyosung Gt125 on the road but been looking at insurance quotes (GoCompare/Comparethemeerkat/etc) and the premiums are ridiculous to the point that I might not bother and just sell it.

Info:
Male, 35
CBT only
Previously insured on Intruder 125 (swinton who now won't insure me)

No claims
1 yr NCB

One SP30 on my license from 3 yrs ago

Live in Essex

I'm a courier, work for DHL (could this be a factor???)

Cheapest quote i've had was £159 from MCE who I've been advised to avoid like the plague and the compulsory excess was £750.00 plus £250.00 voluntary (A grand if i claim!, I think not!)

Next cheapest was in the £550 bracketand upwards from there really.

In all honesty was expecting quotes of 3 - 400 quid with maybe a 250 excess but with the quotes i'm getting I can't afford to put my bike on the road!

Would getting some security devices (Alarm/Ground anchor) help?

If I get an alarm does it have to be certified by an installer or can I fit it?

Don't really know if anyone can advise anything, just was wondering why all so costly for a 125 with a years NCB?

Plus I wanted to rant a little.

Andy

Most likely, not particularly, and no, you can install it.

The excess only works if you claim on the policy.

I'm with MCE, all paid up front no changes to my license or points to date, never contacted them have been fine.

£733 for a DTR 125 in a rubbish area / postcode. £950 excess, so if it gets nicked it's pretty much pointless claiming. But oh well, TPT&F knocked it down a couple of hundred pounds. Laughing

Use Tesco compare!!! It will often give quotes of half what other comparison sites offer. I am 18 and paid £250 to insure my Hyosung GT650R TPFT

Try finding a different job title - I like "cargo operator". Wink

TPO, TPFT, FC. Try it with and without security, and garaged, driveway and street. Try higher and lower mileages. You will trigger a magic sweet spot, you'll just need to keep chiselling away.

The Hyosung might just be expensive though as it's a relatively powerful 125 learnermobile, with one importer, and the parts ain't cheap.

Im with MCE too, had no problems. I was worried about the high excess but pay an extra 5 quid a month on my premium that reduces it.

In fact I think it actually means you dont have to pay the excess. Think its 30 quid for the year.

That link gave me at least 10 minutes entertainment. Who'd have thought a Nursery Worker would pay less for their insurance than a Nun.

Try a comparison on thebikeinsurer.com.

Anti theft devices/alarms are hit and miss with quote reductions/increases even. But id use then in either case, undeclared if needs be.

Your excess sounds about right for new rider from my experience. My compulsary excess is still 500 tpft or fc after 7 years riding. But i am younger and now on a 636cc so probably a factor in it remaining high.

I don't think that's a high quote. For a 125 with one year's experience, I think that would be about right for TPO, and there's no excess applicable to TPO. If it's TPFT, then I think it's very low.

Why would you want to claim for a Korean 125 anyway? I wouldn't even claim for a Japanese 125 unless it was brand new.

With 1 year NCB, I got quotes of £217 TPO for a Yamaha Vity, a tiny underpowered scooter. My SH300 was £200, while a Hornet was £266. FC was £1030 on the SH300, TPFT 517.

(32yo male at the time, no at-fault accidents, only claim was theft, and it's stopped loading my premiums now.)

Surprised I had a Hyosung GT125. Faster and in better condition than an r125 of the same age Folded arms loved it so much I bought the 650 version Shocked You might as well be saying "why would you klaim on a Kia?"

Sorry for the off topic mini rant. carry on Laughing

Well Swinton are only brokers and not a insurance company....

But why will they not take your money?

Have you done something or had a policy revoked? Which maybe the real reason for the high quotes?

I forget about the excess, just don't crash into someone, doesn't matter if they crash into you, you won't have to pay your excess.

Never realised that, so if you're not at fault in an accident your excess isn't required to be paid Question

Presumed it was like TPFT where even if its not your 'fault' its nicked you've still got to pay it Evil or Very Mad

If its nicked yeah, lock it up though so it doesn't get nicked. Laughing

I've never paid and never will pay excess for a non fault accident. Once they determine fault is with me, sure I'll pay it. Asking money for something that they haven't decided fault on is just stupid Laughing

Overall, don't crash and make it your fault.

From personal experience: the electrics rot, the swing arm rots, the exhausts rots and seize in the heads (and come with anti-tamper hilarity), the cam chain tensioners don't tension, and parts are a lottery.

But all that aside, it's purely an issue of value, and the market value of Hyosungs is not as high as their owners would like to believe. Sorry.

Excess isn't that difficult to understand. It's the amount that your insurer will subtract from any pay-out that they make to to you.
