I've a 2 month old laptop with windows 8 on it and i hate it. How do i go about getting windows 7 on it?
Ideally without spending loads of money on it.

Don't bother with the get used to 8 chat, i hate it, it will never grow on me, i either sell the laptop or get 7 on it.

I installed Start8 on my laptop. It gives me the old-style desktop & task bar with a start button and a choice of start menus. I run hardly any Win8 / Metro apps.

It's a bit nuclear, but you could download a legitimate copy of seven, burn to disc and then format and install from scratch.
When it starts complaining about 30 days left to buy a licence, install daz loader.
I would have no qualms since you already effectively paid for windows but the version forced on you is not fit for purpose.

download a slic check tool (you can find one on the below link I think) to see if you have windows 7 activation strings in your bios.

If you have branded bios get your self a copy of windows 7 (digital river or whatever) and the Microsoft usb creator tool (genuine Microsoft) or a blank dvd If you are burning a dvd you will need someway to mount the iso like magic iso or power iso.

https://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/15733-Windows-7-DVD-(Multi-Brand-Multi-Edition)-Activation

Go here and download the oem folder and either add it to your iso or create a usb and copy/paste it in the right place (don't add to iso then try to make usb as it won't work) delete the ei.cfg file to open up the edition selection menu during set up.,

Once you have finished you will have an install media that will activate on any machine with bios tags and will automatically add the correct branding on the welcome screen/desktop and system properties.

One of the download links has an activator scripted in for unbranded machines too, so if it doesn't find a slic string ist will use daz loader.

It really is as easy as deleting one file and adding another, has been indispensable for me so far when repairing people's "licenced" computers.

you can find tutorials elsewhere to import data from the enterprise editions and all the 32/64 bit versions of each edition into your iso .wim file to make a truly universal media but I couldn't be arsed as it takes a bit more work.

https://www.windowsvalley.com/create-windows-7-aio-all-in-one-dvd-or-merge-all-editions-of-windows-7-in-single-dvd/

If you don't like loaders and your pc only has windows 8 bios you could edit your bios using tools from places like bios mods.com (they also do requests too), It is risky editing your bios but reduces the risks to almost zero of getting the non genuine alerts.

You might be able to find a windows 7 version of your bios from the manufacturer that will add all the needed strings but that might (never done that backwards step on a newer machine) remove the windows 8 product key from your machine, what I've read the key is stored in e bios which is why you get no coa sticker.

The majority of the work and original files are all legitimate Microsoft tools and download links so you are far safer making your own than you are downloading from some random torrent or link site.

I looked into doing the same for xp but that seems way more involved and isn't really worth it as the wga tools don't scrutinise the system specifics to much like they do with vista/7.

I have never purchased a full price copy of windows, I only got into messing with computers in about 2009 (24/25yrs old by the time) until then I didn't even own one and only used them at school/college.

When I first started my granddad gave me a vlc copy of windows to use but it was forever getting flagged,

So I bought a netbook/broadband subscription from 3 and it came with branded discs which got me thinking about how it works for the big brands to not need you to activate when you reload, so I looked in to it and found pretty much all the work had been done already for fooling the activation process,

I was planning on slowly buying install media for every brand but once I got all the dell ones I gave up and just used them for everything with suitably modified bios,

This led to some cases of Samsung/ toshiba laptops and stuff being activated as dells which can lead to issues when wga scrutinises everything which is why I always kept an eye out for these multi oem projects.

Now though I can do any branded machine and only have to mess about modding bios if the machine is too old for slic 2.1 or if the pc is a self build even then I can usually match it all up with the correct brand. if you add slp and slic 2.1 you can activate all editions of 2000,xp,vista and 7 (not sure if nt uses slp activation) because vista can be activated with slic 2.0 and slic 2.1

Just a reminder Windows 8.1 official update will be available from the 18th October which will bring back the Start Button, except you have to right-click on it to access the sub-menu of options. I have been running it for quite sometime now and I have come to like it very much over Windows 7.

If you really just want simplicity, an o/s that just runs applications and doesn't try and be clever and do your thinking for you then why not try Linux? You can set it up as a dual boot, so nothing lost if you hate it. Ubuntu and Mint are popular versions for the non-geeky. I replaced the Mrs Vista with Mint a couple of years ago and she loves it. For her to so much as like anything I suggest is unheard of Rolling Eyes

Mrs Borg is also on Mint and not moaning about it significantly more than about anything else. It's my current distro of choice. The only thing I use Windows for is games, and by that I mean Steam. When Valve get their heads sorted out and support WINE (VINE?) then that'll be all she wrote for me.

I have a laptop with windows 7 on it as well as baked beans and a buggered screen...

It just needs a new screen (£40 ish, a mate said he'd fix it for me and then dropped off the planet). Perhaps we could do a swap and work out financials to make it fair??

This is the slic check tool I have used for a few years, it runs from windows unlike some that are bootable.

In the status box at the bottom it will tell you what version slic you have (if any) and the slp1.0 tab will tell you if you have 2000/xp strings and what brand discs will work (often xp discs from a few sister companies will activate).

The advanced tab lets you back up the product key and certificate for the version of windows you have installed.

Run it to see if your motherboard is capable of unattended activation of windows 7.

If it is either make a universal disc as above or buy the correct branded version to suite your pc.

If it hasn't still make the disc as it will use the daz loader anyway, it uses the the acer key and cert to activate and you can force the install of branding still if you want.

Another thing to check would be wheher all the drivers are available for your system to run windows 7.

Pretty much any bios can be modified with the correct tools, phoenix, ami, award, insyde/dell and intel tools are all out there eufi tools are getting better too, although some require a little more work Intel is the toughest to mod but you can easily add your own splashscreen which is nice.

You can slic mod, add splash screens, update cpu microcode, edit and unlock bios option and features (raid support, overclocking and stuff) all with the help of www.bios-mods.com

Have you tried the slic tool to see if you have slic 2.1 bios yet?

If you don't want to mess about editing the iso, I can send you a pre edited copy of both the 32&64bit windows 7 sp2 dvd's they are the English versios from digital river so if you need them the language pack will need downloading from ms update.

Just p.m. me your post address.

Just make sure you download at least the lan and wifi drivers before hand or you could struggle connecting the computer to the net to find all your other drivers after a clean install..
