Hi,

I need to sell my xj because i'm moving house thats walkng distance to work and only 4 mile to other projects i cover.

I don't want to give up biking so want to get a 125 or somthing that is exellent on fuel suggestions welcome please something similar to the varadero. I can't afford to put money in really towards a new bike so the funds from selling my bike will have to cover it.

Thanks Brendan

All I have seen are out my price range. I'll be lucky if I get 600 for the xj600.

why don't you keep it? or am i reading the situation wrong? your not relying on the xj600 so only put fuel in it when you want to ride?

i doubt you'll get a 125 worth having for 600 quid.

My plan is to cycle but I'm a fat bastard so may get sick of that pretty quickly. And a 125 technically should be less to insure, tax and use on the odd day.

Do you not use your motorcycle for frightening yourself and breaking the law at the weekend?

Get your self a classic 70's moped they can be made to go pretty well but can also be used like a bicycle when called for (when you are not in a hurry and want to burn calories instead of petrol).

I have a Honda camino (currently in bits) It is fantastic fun to ride, you just bomb round like you would on a bmx and forget you can't do much more than 30-40mph.

You can either pedal assist and see how fast you can get up to full speed or knock the lever and go full cyclist,

I got thrashing it mercilessly about 75mpg supposedly they are good for about 100mpg is you are sensible.

I never used mine on public roads only for fun and carrying fishing gear round the lakes ( been on sorn since I bought it) it had a smaller rear free wheel so it could pedal assist for longer, lucky to hit 10-15mph (maybe a little more) on pedal power without the smaller freewheel,

stiffer clutch springs (Honda dio +1k), a notched variator (extra 5mph) and some port work (slightly wider transfers and exhaust raised a couple mm) got me near 40mph but didn't want to go more as the stock crank is known to snap if pushed really hard.

I missed a nice camino sport not long ago I regret missing the end of the auction big time, they come with alloy wheels and a twin seat, the benefit of which besides looks is that you get proper sealed wheel bearings in the front instead of bicycle style ones like my spoked bike.

For piddling around short distances at slow speeds a C90 like prawny says, or better still a good old CG or an ancient CB250.

I still don't see why you should get rid of the XJ. Tax difference isn't that huge annually, and it's a low insurance group bike. The only difference is petrol consumption, but if you're not using it for large mileages then the price hit is unlikely to be that huge. If you use the small bike for any motorways or major NSL roads you'll regret getting rid of the XJ unless you like living on the inside lane.

Yeah something like the c90 crossed my mind the 5 mile to other projects can be done on 30 roads.

I also seen a cg Brazil any views on these?

Fancy swapping it for a ZZR400? Smile

Yeah, I know not quite the scooter/125 you had in mind. But dirt cheap to insure, 45-50mpg, and still lots of fun at weekends.

My wife's knackered back ain't getting well with the ZZR and she needs something more upright, a solid reliable commuter bike. XJ600 probably ideal.

Bah, I use an 800 for a short commute. It gets taken out for jollies at every opportunity to warm it up, and I'll be changing the oil twice as often as recommended. Figs given: very few, I'm not on a rehearsal here.

Definitely keep it if the sale funds are all you have to source a new bike with. If it's fairly sound and tidy and needs nothing major doing to it, then things like tyres and new brake pads, chain and sprockets etc are not going to be much more than they would for a 125cc bike.

Basically the reduction in running costs by going down to a 125cc won't be that noticeable other than maybe fuel, but I bet you can get 60mpg from the XJ6 on long steady runs, so it's hardly a guzzler either.

It will most probably be cheaper to insure than a lot of 125cc bikes and be less desirable to joy riding scrote chav bags.

I'd keep it and use it whenever you want, and if you still want something smaller later, id either save up for one, and buy a cheap local bike, or else go to a decent dealer and ask what he could do you in terms of a trade in against a smaller bike. If they had a 125cc of similar value, and your bike is clean and presentable they might be interested?

The zzr seating position would kill me.. Think I'm going to just keep it and only use for occasional rides out and the odd time to work.

It's been a good bike so far with no problems what so ever and it take the 500 miles a week currently with ease. It's low mileage and clean so I might try the dealer once I settle into my new place, which has a 30ft by 20ft garage so I could just get more bikes Very Happy

CB750 was actually £10 less a year to insure than one of the Super-Dream 125's for me, £40 less than the DT125.... which is to say about 30% cheaper than (classic) DT125, about 10% cheaper than 'sensibe' 4-stroke commuter! Off sets the extra £50 or so year in tax a bit!

Divvy is pretty cheap to run 'Big-Bike'; Bit heavier on running costs than a tiddler; but I think to get anything much cheaper 'overall' to run, you'd probably be looking at unloved 'big-tiddlers'; 200 Benly's; GN250's, maybe GPz305 type stuff, and all ways round, taking the risk that some unfortunate mechanical maledy didn't throw all predictions to the wind!

Certainly £600 isn't likely to get you a particularly sparkling Learner-Legal... might get you a pretty nice CD200, or less hope-less 305. Would struggle to get you a half tidy 500 commuter twin; and like as not, not offer much if any saving for the switch.

I'd ponder ecconomics of hanging onto it, and simply making savings from limited use.

Whats the loading on your insurance taking "Including Commuting" off the policy? And maybe halving your estimated annual mileage? And would that help encourage you to take the bus or push-bike to work?

Think you need to do a fair bit of research to find optimum; but on a bike like the Divvy thats a reletively cheap bike, and reletively cheap to run; to start with, I suspect that savings are going to be hard to find, and if found, likely to not be huge; hinting towards, Bike or No-Bike conclusion.

Go look at e-bay; see what you can get in the £600 price range; and pound the comparison sites; and thump e-bay for prices of service spares for the alternatives.

There really comes a point that unless you are desperate for money there isn't a good reason to sell an old bike.

We have our 1999 cat C Fazer that never misses a beat. We would only get a couple of hundred at best for it. We will keep it and it will probably still be in the garage when all the expensive bikes have long gone.
