So as a lover of sleep, I currently have to set 5 alarms on my phone, and a timer on my TV to turn on very loud, but, although I don't sleep through the alarms, I seem to automatically turn over and snooze or cancel them.

I am really waking up with an hour before I have to leave for work, but rushing around with 5 mins to spare by the time I actually get out of my bed.

So guys, recommend me an alarm that I won't sleep through, is affordable and will force me to get out of the bed!

Put alarm on the opposite side of the room to your bed. Makes me get up, especially if you set the alarm tone to One Erection or Justin Bellend

get this on your phone.

You have to do random maths problems to cancel the alarm.

Alarm out of reach, yes, but have you got the time set for when you actually want / need to wake up, or have you made allowance for your slovenliness and set it earlier?

If so, sort yourself out. Set it for when you need to be up, and force yourself awake at that time. No "zznot fair 5 moreminutesmum" self pitying bollocks, wake up, get up, do your morning bayonet drill.

Do that without fail for two weeks and you'll have set yourself a habit for a lifetime. I haven't actually needed an alarm for at least a decade, so honed is my internal clock.

Also, bring back the birch, decimalisation was a mistake, fight them on the beaches.

I have the same problem, so I got this Sonic Boom Alarm Clock. I set my phone alarms to about 10/15 mins before it to give me the chance to wake up without thinking the house is burning down, but if that fails, this usually both wakes me up and freaks me out! Adjustable tone/volume alarm and the vibrating pod is like an iPhone on steroids. It WILL wake you up.

I do all sorts of hours and need to get up at all sorts of times so I haven't got a natural body clock anymore. I give myself an hour to get to work and an hour to get ready, so that is two hours before my work start time. When my alarm goes off I generally need a pee anyway so get up for that.
It is a discipline thing getting up, snooze buttons are the Devil's own.

Where do you live? I'll come tip a pan of water over your head every morning, for a fee. That's what I did to my brother when I was 7, he soon got up Laughing

When I was at uni I used to put the alarm on my stereo, turned up fairly loud (loud enough for housemates to hear it so my guilt would get me up) - it was far away enough for me to HAVE to get out of the bed, and I took the batteries out of the remote Thumbs Up

Nowadays though I just use my phone. I snooze at least 3 times but I set my alarm well in advance of when I actually need to be up.

I used to do the 'snooze a few times' thing. I had real trouble waking up.
I found the thing that worked for me was adjusting my sleep so that I actually got enough Smile but also set the alarm so that is it. It's set for the time you absolutely have to get up.
No snooze.
Snooze, you lose, type of situation.

You can disable the automatic restart. That used to piss me off rotten when I would set my computer to do something overnight and in the morning it had restarted without my consent. So yeah, I turned that feature off.

Stop being so lazy then Very Happy

But a genuine answer:

For the best results you need to get your body in to a rhythm. You need to have a clear time of what time you sleep and what time you need to wake up. I usually jump in to bed around 1am and hop out around 8:00am-9:30am depending on whether I need to do anything that day.

https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/250264.stm

You can also get alarm clocks which supposedly simulate the morning. That is they gradually brighten the room and some start bring in natural sounds which start off too quiet to hear and very gradually get louder. It's a gradual process. Some of these alarms can trigger about 30 minutes before you wish to wake up.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38vfQEqJtz4

The idea is that your body subconsciously registers this information and begins the natural process of waking you up. For a good day, you need to awake during a "light sleep" cycle. If you awake during a "deep sleep" or "rem" cycle (which can easily happen if your alarm is sudden and loud) you'll just feel grouchy all day.

I've never tried one of those style alarms as I'm lucky enough for my internal body clock to do a good job of waking me up on time, so my alarm is just a backup. The theory seems sound to me though.

Sleep If U Can is an app that makes you get out of bed when the alarm goes off, by cancelling the alarm requires taking a photo of a photo you took recently to set the alarm. Take a photo of your toaster to set, and you'll have to march downstairs to cancel the alarm.

HTH.

Rogerborg's idea is pretty much #1.

While you're in bed you rationalise away time far too easily. 10 minutes... another 10 minutes... ah I've got half an hour to get ready for work.. then it's 25 minutes to get a shower, have breakfast, suit and boot, find keys/wallet/etc.

Straight up, cut the excuse bollocks, phone at other side of room and get up when it goes off. Two might be useful as a backup in case one wasn't set properly.

Set some music quietly, or set for the radio to come on quietly, this will bring you out of a deep sleep then use a normal clock for when you need to get out of bed. I also use a wake up light in the winter.

I once heard someone say that basically, you need to get up before your sense of self preservation does - so Rog is right I guess, just get STRAIGHT up, before your brain even has time to start thinking "Oooooo but I'm soooo snuggly like a little bug in a rug, and beds so warm, and that person next to me is so sexy..."

Get yourself a flying alarm clock, can pick one up for about a fiver, and believe me, they get you out of bed.

Basically a really loud alarm, followed by a whirring, then a rotar thing pings off at surprising speed, meaning you have to chase it round the room swearing until you catch that fother mucker and stick it back on its stand to shut it up.

Believe me, you'll jump out of bed at lightning speed to try and catch it before it takes off.

Only problem with them is when they die - my rotar came apart quite spectacularly whilst the alarm was going off. Had to throw it out the window to shut it up as I couldn't think of anything else.
