Having ordered my nice new chain and removed the old one and cleaned the guides, swing arm, rollers etc it was time to press on the plate and rivet the new one. On the first pin, the pressure on the spanner increased and then I felt it decrease so I backed it off immediately to have a look and I've split the head:

The second one I stopped before this point and it seemed to go ok. My first thought is to order another link and start again, but I'm not sure if it is, or will cause a problem?

Any thoughts?

Looks fine to me, there is no side way force, so I wouldn't worry. Looks solidly put to me, others may disagree

As long as it moves freely, I'd say it's fine.

As said, it doesn't really have any sideways force, and I imagine it will still be stronger than a split link anyway.

Yeah it feels fine when compared with the links either side and the cheek plates measure very close to the adjacent ones with a vernier, just concerned the MOT man wont like it, or that the head will shear off at somepoint....

For peace of mind you could always just buy a new link and fit it.

I seem to remember I did the same on an old bike of mine and it was fine and went through MOTs fine.

Husqvarna SM125, so not exactly a high stress environment for a chain.

Personally I wouldn't be happy with that to be honest. Not only have you split the head of the pin but it looks like you have pushed the side plate too far onto the pins which has deformed and displaced the x-ring/s behind it. You can see at least one x-ring being squashed and forced out from behind the side plate in the photo (to the left of the damaged pin). This will very quickly split and fall off in use leaving you with an unsealed link that will wear much more rapidly than the rest of the chain.

I know it's not what you wanted to hear but I would change that for a new one. And go a bit easier fitting the new one.

Hmm, I hadnt noticed that! I suspect Ive nipped it between the upstand on the narrow link (used to centre it) and the cheek plate, as the cheek plate measures correctly with verniers.

Will order another link and try again, may as well have it right. I was surprised at the lack of instructions with either the link or the tool tbh!
