1997 kawasaki er-5

starter relay sort of melted itself recently... so i've just had a chance to replace it with a brand new one... wired it up exactly as the old one came off.. and hey presto.. LIFE!

bike runs fine now... but, when i turn the key off (or the kill switch, both same), the starter fires for half a second...

is this ok? bad earth? shit relay? (wasn't that cheap)...

one chap told me the wires the wrong way round will cause this, but i've checked a mate's er-5 and his is exactly the same way round as mine and works fine.

edit* checked, and it's labelled B and M for battery and motor, it's fitted correctly.

For the starter motor to fire, the relay needs to be making the link.

This means either the starter button is making contact when it shouldn't (strip and clean), something is shorting between the starter button and the relay (trace wires and connections, look for rubber off insulation or filthy connectors) or a problem with the relay itself (less likely).

Clean earthing points throughout are always a good idea.

it doesn't do it whilst engine is running, so the button is not likely. just after the engine stops.

it also wasn't doing it a few weeks ago when the bike came off the road. so i'm thinking it's either the relay is shite, or i've got corrosion in earths somewhere since it's been laid up
