It's been like it for ages, only really bothered now as GTA V is out.

It locks up when it plays Games for any length of time.

Fine on Blu Rays, fine on other stuff, just games. It'll randomly crash. No YLOD or RLOD.

Any thoughts?

Just done a file restore, and will do a full system restore if that doesn't cure it.

Let's see if it works!

Mine did that once or twice when it got hot in a cabinet. Is it getting plenty of air?

Yeah, it lives on the floor though, so doesn't get much airflow through the bottom. This will soon change as I have a different tv cabinet coming in a week. Have moved it in the meantime as you make a good point.

Is there a way to see the temps on the standard firmware?

Raise it off the floor using stacked books, dvd cases or something similar.

2 stacks of 3 dvd cases, one on either side of the ps3, should do the trick.

It's doing a system update as we speak. Going to see if they have any GTA Vs left at my local Tesco.

Which PS3 is it? My old 60gb displayed similar problems until I took it apart and blew all the dust out with an airline at work.
Plus it had a complete reset, not sure which remedy worked but its never put a foot wrong since.

Might be caked in dust on the inside as well, might be worth blowing it out with compressed air. Or do the fan test thing if you have the fat ps3:
