Every seen one this bad before??

just took it out of a APC 700 that had started to beep (dead battery)

You managed to get those out - I've seen them so badly swollen that they would have been too risky to remove.

Ours boiled at the beginning of summer. Only around 40 batteries bubbling away under my feet. Laughing

so what is it the electrolyte evaporates an the ups keeps trying to charge it so which then warps the plates or some other type of jazz?

The batteries are beyond use so the UPS stays trying to charge them causing them to overheat and warp.
As said above seen much worse.

I once had a bank of 6 x 10Ah UPS batteries and each one had swollen to the size of a football almost.

Had to take the UPS to almost component parts to remove, as could not get them out the front hatch!
