Right, I've just got hold of a mid 2012 macbook air, even though I hate macs... It's dual OS with windows 7 and macOS. I've had someone offer me $950 for it, with which I can get the other laptop.

It's actually pretty OK with the windows thing... I hate to say it.

I want to get an Alienware laptop, preferably an M14x or M15x so it's still portable.

Am I an idiot for wanting an alienware as a daily carry?

Pro's cons/comparison between the two?

Expect it to be heavy, hot and the battery to be bollocks. If you're a real PC gamer there is no contest. If you want something to browse the net and do some word processing on the mac is the perfect tool. As are you if you spend all your time on it in a coffeeshop.

I have an MBP and it plays all the games I want it to - Borderlands 2, Skyrim, Arma 2 and 3, Guild Wars 2, GTA IV, etc etc etc. It's also a very solid feeling, well put together machine that's light enough to carry to college and back. That's what I like about it, that I can take it with me but then come home and plug it into the TV or put it on my table and play games.

My friend had an Alienware somethingorother, top range. Amazing looks, coloured light keyboard, huge screen, tons of power. It also weight a ton, the casing cracked with the normal wear and tear of being carried around and not long after he'd bought it either.

It's up to you, but when my MBP hits four years old next year and if I can afford it, I'll be getting another one. I'm not a graphics whore so don't care about having all settings at max.

I had a proper 'desktop replacement' gaming laptop in the form of a Dell Inspiron once and it was a heavy, flimsy, low battery life piece of crap. It broke all the time, it was only portable in that you could pick it up and carry somewhere else.

I'd bite his hand off, a new one's only 949.00.

Then buy a new one.

My macbook's still doing sterling services after 6 years. Probably time for a new one.

Not a fan of the m13x, can't speak for the 14 or 15 though. The 2012-2013 MBA is an absolute gem, the latest mid 2013 only really advances in battery life, what it gains in SSD speed it loses in CPU (Although the improved turbo ratios get it closer than the clock speed difference would suggest).

$950 seems like a pretty sweet offer though.... Neutral

I didn't like macs to start off with. Saw them as overpriced Apple fan-boy merchandise, when they couldn't do anything that windows machine couldn't. Since I got one, I thoroughly changed my mind.

I love the screen resolution for a start. I always thought my Acer 6920G had a good screen, but in comparison it's so pixelated. Also the trackpad gestures are a really neat feature for productivity. The OS does miss a few things though. I installed an application which gave me keyboard shortcuts to move windows to different quadrants on my screen. I think the OS is one of those things that you start off hating, because it doesn't behave like windows does. But as you start to use it more and more, and you learn new ways of interacting with it, it really grows on you.

For a laptop, I love my mac and can't see me really wanting a different machine for my usages.

However, if you plan on gaming at all, I'd grab the Alienware.

If I was having a desktop though, I'd be building something and bunging windows on it.

Stigger is a slow one, you need to explain to him fully because he is incapable of understanding very well.

I could have sworn I'd replied to this.

A 2013 model is £949 new, the OP was offered £950 for a 2012.

As I said take money buy a new one, it's not rocket science.
