Hi everyone

I'm looking to get a bigger bike (currently have a GPZ500S) and was thinking about the Yamaha Diversion 900 as it's supposed to be a sports tourer. My wife has finally come around to the idea of selling the car as we hardly use it & she's happy to tour on the bike with lots of luggage. Can anyone who has this bike tell me about any reliability issues, etc?

Some neighbours used to have a Diversion 600 but they've since moved & I was young at the time. All I remember them saying was "we're always last away from the lights" due to it's lack of power. Is the 900 similar in it's class of bikes?

I'm also concerned about the air cooled engine, I do a fair bit of commuting and my gpz500s liquid cooled engine can sometimes struggle to keep the temp down when commuting, has anyone had problems with the Diversion 900 overheating?

Plenty of poke in a 600 if you give it some right hand. Maybe the guy was a bit nervous of large handfulls of throttle. Sure its not the fastest away from the lights, but are you really bothered. Happly run at 85 with no problems, so a 900 will be even better.
Add in the bonus of shaft drive and you are laughing.
My ave mpg over the last 3 tanks of juice has been 66mpg...

As to air cooling, far better than water cooled as you do not have to worry about overheating the same. If you are that worried then turn the engine off at lights.

My instructor had a 900 and it was always loaded down with hard luggage and was used every day for training. They're a big old workhorse of a bike and are a decent touring bike. Not the most exciting but easy to work on, cheap to run and eat up the miles...

Had the 600 myself and miss it every now and again... Smile

I had the XJ900 (pre-Divvy) and absolutely loved it.

It's heavy at first, but you can still throw it around through the traffic with ease. 1980's brakes were naff, but they've much improved since it was re-named as a Diversion.

Definitely not a slow bike and I was able to keep up with speed triple's without too much of a problem.
Accelerating from the lights was great with no chance of accidental wheelie's thanks to the huge lump of an engine, and it's good on fuel too.

So...Comfy for two, practical, easy to maintain, fast, fun, heavy, reliable and highly recommended by me.

Going from that to a Hornet 600 was a real drag, I badly missed the torque and power of the larger engine and regretted getting rid of my old XJ9.

Thanks guys, really appreciate the advice.

I'm very tempted, I'm 6'1" and find the GPZ500S too small and a bit flimsy. I'd much rather a heavier bike. Even the GSXR600 feels like a kids toy!

The shaft drive is a big plus for my touring plans not having to worry about chain lube. I've seen a few pictures of the 900 with different seats, I'm assuming there are a few aftermarket seats available? Something wide with a lot of padding is a must to keep my wife happy...I can't understand why as she's tall & skinny?!!

Are panniers or touring kits easy to get hold of? There's almost nothing available for the GPZ500S which is a huge draw back.

I bought my 600N from there and all questions will be answerd by those who know divvys inside out. They also have a Wanted board on which im sure you could pick up panniers etc

Me too, I'd have another one if it wasn't for the poor fuel consumption, at around 45mpg. Or have I just been spoiled by the Enfield's 72mpg and the CB's 62mpg? Hhhmmm... Smile

I have a 1998 Divvy, Love it to death, Heavier than the moon but just keeps going, torquey 8 Valve engine and hardly ever need to cog swap, just what you need in a tourer.
Only five gears but lots of get up and go if you need it, works well 2 up and only need to change the oil in the drive rarely, (Easy job anyway better than my chain drive CB900FA), never missed a beat.

The lowly-tuned air-cooled engine will likely cope with commuting better than your liquid-cooled bike.

The GPZ500 usually gets very hot in traffic mostly because the fan takes ages to come on, I never looked into this as it got stolen before I tried to remedy it but all 3 of the ones I had did the same thing. Worrying seeing the temperature so close to the red after 30 minutes in heavy traffic.
The aircooled xj900 has none of these issues. Watercooling still relies on airflow being maintained of course.

Whilst my KTM is being fixed, I have a 2010 Diversion 600 and I've been totally suprised at how nice a ride it is. Very comfy, smooth as hell riding it and it's got a decent bit of power if needed.

See, I disagree with the concept of 'expired threads.'

This thread was near the top of google for me, today in September 2013, for a couple of XJ900S related searches.

So how can it be called dead? Especially when it is a general post like this, of value to all sorts of people who might stumble on it besides OP.

So, I'm chiming in that I bought an XJ900S about a month ago, and I LOVE it.

I've owned about 10 bikes in my life, as an all around everyday bike to live with and ride, this is my favorite. It's really rather brilliant.

Please note these remarks are about a 15 year old, poorly maintained example with ~100k.

Pros: I just trust it. It just feels right.
Well designed, well thought out, easy to live with. Spark plug job on the side of the road with included tool kit took < 10 mins.
Good power. Never at a loss. Get up in the RPMs, and it can really pull on your arms. But super easy to ride mildly.
Very strong, robust design. Dropped it very hard while parked, my foot slipped. Fell right on fairing. Didn't even scratch it.
Great wind protection, best I've experienced.
Clock and accurate fuel gauge.
Very comfortable for long distances.
Easy to slip through traffic.


Cons: Brakes require a lot of pull. Not confidence inspiring.
Takes a long time to get warmed up.
Heavy.
Handling isn't superb, but then I have cheap mismatched tires. It's OK.



Verdict: If you want a bike to live with through the thick and thin rather than show off, it's hard to beat.

Try one and you'll see the difference!

*Not including twins - why would you want your 'sports' bike to be slower than is allowed? Smile

To be honest I have been very pleasantly surprised with my divvy900, with a hagon shock at the back, fresh oil in the forks at the front and a decent pair of tyres it handles very nicely.

Plus with the delkevic pipes it is the only bike I have every been on or owned where people who pull up beside me at the lights compliment the sound, on several occasions too! When riding through London to get so much as a glance from another biker is an achievement and the sound of this actually gets people talking Laughing

Having moved from a steelie CBR600F I don't feel disappointed at much other than the old mans bike looks!
