Take a look through BCF and there are tales of woe where people are knocked off and its not their fault but they have trouble proving anything. With this in mind I decided to buy a camera purely for insurance purposes.
I needed time and date, auto start with ignition, run off ignition and loop recording so I don't have to touch the camera. The only camera that met these criteria was the Roadhawk ride and its also one of the cheapest decent cameras on the market at only £135 delivered.

Here's a quick demo of what the footage is like on a ride through central London this morning.

Demo video

The camera is deliberately hidden under the front fairing so as to be inconspicuous, that way you can let the other person lie to their insurance and then present a video proving it. On the other hand if it is your fault you don't need to mention it.

Hi

Does it have any way to keep the lens clean? If not how long do you think the lens will stay clean?

All the best

Keith

A VERY big mudguard and a wipe with a finger. Has a plastic front over the lens as well.

What happens if someone drives into the back/left/right of you and drives off?

You need 4 of these cameras to cover yourself.

You don't need multiple ones, you're no worse off with one than none. Wink

I'm minded to go helmet mounting, for one thing to demonstrate observations being performed. Tricky call though. Thinking

Nice footage on that Roadhawk, thanks for the demo.

You can still prove you were hit and claim against the MIB. You don't need to see the car that hits you to prove you were hit.

To claim from the MIB i believe you need the details of the driver?

Nice demo.

I see a lot of guys with helmet mounted cams on a daily commute.

Maybe give a bigger view than than where you have yours fitted.

You don't need the drivers details, MIB cover for uninsured or untraced drivers.

I always ride with a handlebar mounted cam, essential kit for London riding IMO.
As it happens I just purchased a Contour Roam2 (£135 from Amazon) which I've also mounted to my helmet.

MIB untraced drivers scheme.

Camera on lid does give a better view but the batteries run out.

Rider at work has a Drift on his helmet and got 'u' turned, the batteries had run out. This is why I specifically wanted one to run off the bike with no input from me.

...and one other question, once it's installed via the hardwire kit, is it easy to remove when parking up? (...and to reconnect again)
Does the connection harness feel like it'll handle being plugged/unplugged regularly?

Not really, its meant for permanent fitting so put it somewhere inconspicuous.

Total noob question (due to never having looked at, nevermind used, one of these) does it record to some sort of microcard, therefore the duration depends on the size of the card?

Yes it does record to a micro SD card but it also loops so overwrites the earliest recording. Mine has a 32GB card and records about 4gb an hour.

Oh, that is good quality. Even with the car headlights on it, it's still not washing out. Thumbs Up
