Youtube launch video is weird as hell, but the basic premise of this bike looks great. 700cc parallel twin, clearly aimed at taking the fight to the ER6/SV650. It is far more ugly than the slightly cuddly looks of the SV, and the funky look of the ER6, but there you are.

Whatever's going on at Yamaha at the moment, it's great to see them being more innovative.

Once they realise that a 4 cylinder high revving 250 is a great idea, I'll buy a new bike.

This just looks like another 1 up on another company Laughing Smash them all by releasing some sick bike that other makers do not have and will not have for a while... people may want it Wink , 18-20k redline, 50hp, full size. Think slightly smaller 2008 Fireblade or 2003 R1 with a mighty little revvy motor.

Drooling

I would love any of the big 4 to do that, along with some stupidly high powered naked bike, 1000cc+ IL4. Like what BMW have done but with the full fat, not semi skimmed power.

I also like quirky Yamahas too for some reason. I like the MT-09 too. This one is just a smaller MT-09 really. It's nicer than the ER6 and the SV650 and Glaydius, what is not to like? I wouldn't buy one, but if I was in that earlier stage in my biking career then I'd consider it.

The MT-09 is cheap as chips too. If they price this low and it retains some of what seems to have got the MT-09 reviewers in the mags creaming themselves it will sell like hotcakes.

My girlfriend's brother bought his SV650 new, I can scarcely believe that there are still people willing to buy them and that they will be able to stay in production against stuff like this if the price is right.

They did stop selling SVs for a bit, then brought it back when the Gladius received a luke warm reception.

They must have put something in the water at Yamaha HQ. I hope they use the R1's motor in their next one. MT11 that is a naked R1 with crazy manga styling. Me likey.

Agreed - two new triple engines and all sorts of new bikes.

Meanwhile, in Suzuki's design department:

Who designed that sofa fabric. Shocked

They're busy wasting their time with this:

Still under the illusion that moto gp sells bikes.

I think Yamaha noticed that it didn't, when they didn't sell many R1s even though they were like "Look it sounds like Rossi's moto gp bike!!!!"

It's nice to see Yam designing some fairly interesting bikes, as the Big Jap four of late have been dull as dishwater with the half hearted efforts they have been making of new bikes.

I think the Yam twins and triples will be interesting and sell well, as the completion from Honda and Suzuki is just dire really!

They need to make a street triple styled naked with the XTZ1200 engine though, as only KTM has 1200cc+ IL2 bike out now.

Kawasaki have done a few semi interesting bikes, they are the only ones making a semi sporty bike A2 bike in the form of the Ninja 300.

I think Yamaha could get some more use out of the YZF125R chassis if they stuff in a WR450 motor tuned to exactly 47bhp.

With 250cc in-line fours it's simple, people just would not pay the money. It's not 80's nor 90's anymore and to make an road going vehicle you have to obey strict rules that changed a lot since the 90's. To make something with 250cc in-line four four stroke engine eligible it'd take a lot of work and detuning to fulfil the EURO 3 (soon to be 4).
Would you pay a lot of money for a distinctly detuned 250cc in-line four with terrible mpg, short service intervals and the speed of a CBR500R or less?

^^ A YZF450 would sell well if it had 47bhp and was as light as it could be legally.

If Yamaha can start a whole new venture into triple engines, I'm pretty sure making a smaller engine block for an R6 with smaller pistons isn't the krypton factor.

Magic stuff has happened before, push around 50hp from a high revving motor, can't see many issues, my 4cm x 4cm pistons in the Varadero have had 12k rpm hammered onto them for 20k+ miles with nothing but oil changes. Honda knows the way of the samurai, they should be researching this shit rather than here is the CBR250, with its single cylinder roflmotor.

I nearly bought a Yamaha last week brand new. Then I said "I quite like the look of it in the grey and blue trim"

"That's £500 extra"

So I went to Kawasaki instead.

Classic line; have you ridden any of the high revving 250s?
I'm sure it's much better than the new CBR250 (sic), but I always found the RR a bit flat. Sure, it revs high, but it doesn't rev that fast and doesn't feel like it's got particular 'steps'.

2 stroke lighter, trimmer, more powerful and more characterful.
Doesn't sound like an F1 car when you stick a race can on, however.
