Due to a recent bit of fun with a sump plug, I've had to trace a spare strainer cap but I've found a possible trip hazard when it comes to finding parts by the VIN.

My bike was made in 2009 but not registered until 2010. When searching for parts on MSP by VIN, I'm shown the parts for the 2010 model. Luckily in each case this part is the same, but this might not always be the case.

I can't rule out some error on the site, so can someone confirm that VINs are provided when the bike is registered?

Just because your bike was made in 2009 doesn't mean it's a 2009 model year model - it could well be a 2010 model year model.

The VIN should show the model year, which should relate specifically to the parts used on your bike.

Buying parts related to year is always a bit of a minefield though. You're best off buying parts based on the part number of the thing you removed.

For the last few months we have been building 2015 model year cars at work. VIN is assigned to the body when it hits the production line.

Wait what? so these new cars will have the 2015 specific vin identification letter but will have sat round for two years by the time they hit the showrooms.

I hope they are stored well for the corrosion warranty sake.

Just lol. This isn't the 70's British Leyland (or Victory). Panels are zinc plated, dipped and electrostatically painted. Corrosion is the least of your worries.

You didn't really think they made all the 2013 bikes IN 2013 did you? Shocked

I understand they would make so many chassis/frames for a model run before hand but I wouldn't have thought they stamped them up years in advance.

Just makes the dvla's declared date of manufacture laughable that's all, I have always associated the vin as being when the vehicle was made rather than just denoting the "design model year".

When you contact the manufacturer for an age verification letter to register a vehicle are they just going by the vin age or the actual production line age?

I think that it is based on the date that the vehicle is released by the factory, ready to be sold. The declared date of manufacture is laughable and should really be the date of assembly. Some parts that go into the vehicle could be quite a few years old before they are used.

This is one way that dealers discount vehicles, from aging stock. Most model year changes are so minimal that few notice the difference.

The VIN is the identification number of the bike/build. In this case (a standard motorcycle) the build should be exactly the same as the one before it and the one after it, barring maybe the colour. Therefore buying parts via the VIN number should be spot on. It has no bearing on when the bike was registered.
