So i've been desperately trying to find a bike shop in Tyne and Wear that would do an MOT for today, all to no avail!

Ended up having to book with an Halfords Autocentre which should be interesting.

So where a large proportion of the populous working office hours, why are so few bike places open on one of the 2 main days they would get business? To me it makes very little sense!
I have been to places on a Saturday and it has always been heaving.

Surely it would make much more business sense to open on a Sunday and close one of the weekdays instead.

I do work weekends. I was at work last Night and working tonight as well Rolling Eyes

Why should they? Because they are a business providing a service and thus being a business, intend on being profitable.
Not 1 has thought, hmmmmm if I open on a Sunday and no-one else is, I can get all the custom.

If you look properly, i'll think you'll find a healthy proportion of people work office hours, including many bikers.

Notice how you see more bikes on a weekend as oppose a Wednesday.............

So you've answered your own question, they are bikers too (bike mechanics) and want to ride.

In all fairness the bike garage near me is open til 6pm on a sunday.

So as a business they have overheads and staffing costs, IF they opened on a Sunday I`m guessing they`ll be lucky to do more than 1 MOT that day. Which I doubt the profit on that will cover their overheads

It's just lack of competition. If nobody offers it, nobody else is losing business from it. They know you'll still need the MOT done come Monday.

Does this Halfrauds Autocentre know that it's a bike MOT? I mean, do the actual spanner monkeys know?

I ask because I went into a Halfrauds to get a BIKE plate made up, and when they'd finished making up a BIKE plate for my BIKE, they handed me a single line CAR plate. Rolling Eyes

To be honest I can only think of a handful of things I'd want to do less on a Sunday than get my steed MOT'd. FFS there's bike shops round here that don't even open on Sundays never mind testing stations.

I work permanent nights so it near as dammit makes no difference to me when I book stuff in for tests, bank/doctors appointments etc etc. People laugh at me for such things but at least I don't need time off work just to get my chest waxed.

Fucking what?

I work weekdays 9-5 and Sunday opening is the one thing that irritates me most in the world (I'm an easygoing guy)

The overheads are still there if they're closed on Sunday Confused

Only their rental costs, as it's not heated/lit etc. if there's no one there. Wink

Locally(ish) to me the only place I can think of that opens on a Sunday is OYB, and that's showroom only and only through summer. Even then it's not exactly heaving.

Pointless for a garage to be open on a Sunday if none of their suppliers are as if anything needs parts then they won't be able to do the work. The one business I really don't understand why it doesn't operate at evenings and weekends is courier companies!

Chasbikes in London used to do Sunday MOT's but I don't think they do now, and it wouldn't help you much anyway.

Caddishead Motorcycles do weekend MOT's. The guy does a roaring trade.
Don't forget, weekends are also the only useful days most people have for actually fixing and maintaining their bikes, especially MOT preparation.

AHEM !!

Or do you mean parcel carrier companies?

TBH, as a courier you'll get a job on a weekend once every 2 or 3 months and on a weekday evening maybe collecting out of hours once every few weeks.

Apologises I did indeed mean parcel couriers. It would surely make better business sense for them to make deliveries to personal addresses evenings/weekends as it would cut down the number of re-deliveries involved.

Sooooo I book it online this morning. At the very beginning their system asks for registration, so I put it in. The system clearly states its a motorcycle and that the make too. I go through the rest of the process and book and pay for it.

I turn up............... Oh we don't MOT bikes!!!

Oh FFS!! Evil or Very Mad

...and because you're British (...well, Northern English in your case) and didn't want to cause a scene, you sheepishly accepted the plate and fitted it to your bike anyway.

Halfords auto centre are dreadful. They use cheap Chinese parts and charge full price. I know this because my mum's old focus blew an ignition coil, halfords auto centre fitted a new one, which blew within 2 weeks. A garage we went to have it looked at said it was a crappy, cheap Chinese ignition coil Mad

Halfords are okay for getting an urgently needed socket or a bit of oil at the weekend but you can't really expect them get too technical with things.

I have conceded defeat. I have searched for anywhere within 30 miles and nothing.

Sorry didn't really make it clear what I meant was that people laugh at me for working nights. I don't get it. 20% shift allowance, hardly any work to do and I don't have to do stupid early shifts with 4am starts.
