I believe straight line testing doesn't fall under the 'testing ban' rules.

I used to work very close to Duxford IWM. Regularly used to hear F1 engines screaming, so it's been used as a testing ground for quite a while. Sounds like a nasty crash Confused

The team has previously relied only on computer modeling data for their aerodynamic design and had been off the pace. They recently got access to the Mclaren wind tunnel and have redesigned a lot of the car. Straight line testing verifies their work in the real world before they take all the new bits to an actual race. Generally they'll be looking at aerodynamic load at various speeds, wing flex, engine temperature and airflow into the airbox, brake temperatures etc.
To be honest she was taken on for sponsorship / media attention reasons rather than driving talent as always seems to be the way with women in F1, so i wouldn't be shocked to find out it was driver error.
Sponsors as so desperate for a woman in F1 they're ruining the chance of it happening by encouraging teams to take on women who are either crap or just not ready.

Only because we push the limits, women should stick to pushing prams.

I bet her husband was really upset, She hadn't washed and ironed his shirts for work.

Sense of humour failure, much?

I'll give you a hint about my post, it comes from a Harry Enfield sketch. Cornish got the joke, she (evidently) found it amusing. Stop with the White Knighting - it's highly unlikely to get you laid.

Thumbs Up

On a slightly more serious note, I think it's really sad when women are given certain jobs solely because they are female. IMHO it's just as bad as not giving them a job because they are a woman.

Thumbs Down

To answer the original question - teams get 4 days of either straight-line aero testing or full-size wind tunnel testing per year to use as they see fit. It's usually used to correlate the 60% tunnel model to the actual race car. We used to test at Duxford, it's not unusual.

There are a few rumours around as to how the accident happened, from her misjudging the clutch bite point and the anti-stall kicking in to an electrical/mechanical failure. Speculation is pointless, however, as it won't change anything now. It sounds like it could have happened to any or many rookies.

As for Maria herself, well she was quick enough when she had a few laps in the Renault F1 car a couple of years back. So, although I know it's only gallows humour, it's a little churlish to suggest the accident was in any way linked to her gender.

Here's a bloke fucking it up big style in an R28, and he's a professional driver under no pressure and in a straight line. These cars are a bit wilder than you'd probably imagine.
