Watching the news this evening it was mentioned that police are to try fitting speed cameras to the rear of their bikes.

Wiltshire force are the first to try this out. Claiming that they can be setup on a bike in places where a van would be positioned dangerously (i.e. in rural areas) and also for hard to access areas.

Somerset police force have new cameras that reads every number plate that passes and homes in on them and can tell if the vehicle is taxed / insured / stolen / occupants wanted for a crime.

So in my opinion
Thumbs Up Somerset
Thumbs Down Wiltshire

This gives them the opportunity to hide in bushes etc... and completely catch you out! Evil or Very Mad

Herts police have some unmarked police bikes with cameras fitted, they've had them for years.

They don't use them for speed detection or anything, just for filming bad driving and things like that, for evidence.

Sounds like a superb idea to me! Cool

Get the people who are not insured, p1ssed or taking the p1ss. Better than all these fixed gatso's that add nothing to society!

Sussex police have had the automatic number plate recognition system running for a while now. Quite clever stuff, it cross references your number plate with a hot list provided from the police national computer.

I believe it also checks against the insurance database, not tax though (as this is a dvla matter). Normally there will be a police bike in the area to pull over any hits on the ANPR system.

Hi

I have heard of them put Gatso cameras on bikes. Not keen on the idea, but then think those who indulge in the camera scam to make their dubious living should slither back to the ponds they have barely evolved from living in.

As to the ANPR systems I am not so sure. Overall they are only really there for VED and that is a horrendously complicated and expensive to collect tax which could easily be eliminated.

All the best

Keith

They should use them to catch all the idiots who use their phone when driving!

They're already using them in North Wales, typically on sunny Sundays. They actually said in the paper they were targetting motorcyclists Confused

So a police rider, who is trained to the highest standards and taught to deal with all kinds of situations, parks up and pulls the trigger on a few cars doing 34 in a 30 all day.

Effective training then huh Confused And what is so wrong about riding round and 'policing' th eroads instead of sitting around catching speeders. Evil or Very Mad Gah what's the point, this country is truly fucked Thumbs Down

How long before every vehicle is equipped with a beaconing device which, amongst other things, reports your speed... all the time!!! If you go over, you're booked. The technology is already there you know! No need for traffic cops, speed cameras etc.

Sorry to ruin anybody's afternoon.

I agree with Kris. They need to be looking out for dangerous drivers, who cause a shedload more accidents and deaths than speeders do. One gatso would pay for plenty of extra Police for a few years.
