First off, I didn't think it nessesary to put this topic in the workshop because its not really mechanical.

So, I've only had my Hornet for about a fortnight now and I've only just noticed a small iron plate sitting inside of the front wheel rim.

Not sure how it got there or if anyone knows if this is some kind of tracking or tagging device?

I've washed the bike two or three times since I got it and don't recall it being down there. Anyone have any idea?

It's an RFID chip put there by the robot aliens who want to control your mind!

No, not really it's a wheel weight. It's for balancing the wheel.

Wheel weights? Don't listen to them. They work for the people that put it there.

Also the wheel, presuming that's not perfectly balanced.

(In the case of my KTM with the tubeless system - about 15 of them did. Couldn't find any cheap spoke weights.)

Also, for the record, it isn't iron. I would guess stainless steel from the photo.

They septics noticed that the millions of lost wheel weights were contaminating the environment with lead. True to form, they didn't quite get the irony of banning lead wheel weights from the average 7L V8 family car for environmental reasons.

That said, the only proper bans that I am aware of are across the pond. You can still buy lead wheel weights in the UK which suggests they haven't been banned but most are zinc, or plated/painted steel and sold as lead free.
